Mis-shapen alloy wheel nuts (landrover)

Ive got loads of these that are mis shapen -

A 27mm socket goes over a good one absolutely fine, but jams half way on a lot of them, and, some, it wont go on at all.

I cant even really understand why they would get damaged - i mean, you put the socket on, and.... But, alas, they are.

Any ideas as to re-forming them?

I dont really understand the design - theyre the threadded part, a captive washer, and then a thin shiny bit on the top that seems loose, but never comes off. On the more damaged ones its no longer loose.


Im wondering if i hammered on a socket that was a fraction less than 27mm, and then pressed them out, or somthing like that?

I think the silver skin is probably too thin to start filing.

...maybe i could try squeezing them in a vice - the silver bit must be over somthing harder, that, maybe, i could re-form it over?

If my memory is correct its impact guns that cause it.

Chuck them away and buy proper solid ones.

A flank drive socket would probably still work fine on them - but cost more than a set of new wheel nuts.

Solid what? If theyre steel, then theyll just rust?

I could take the alloy skin off these, i suspect, but then ill end up with some odd size nut!

I wouldn't do that, you'll just find an unholy mess underneath.

I have had two (still have one) Jags with these. I binned them, and the locking ones, and fitted a replacement set without those hateful shiny covers. Jag and L/R forums are awash with examples.

I had the same problem on my MG. The outer casings had swelled due to rust on the actual nuts so I binned them all and fitted solid, chromed ones.
As you say, if you remove the skin they'll be an odd size.

I changed mine to solid stainless a couple of years ago.
A bit pricey mind.

Never had a problem with them on the D2, wack a socket on to reform them. They are an odd size without the outer on. Solid ones seemed expensive for something not oe spec

On mine I always pull them off, remove the nut, do whatever, do the nut up, then push the covers back on.
It never occurred to me to put a socket over them.

Underneath the soft ally is a propper steel wheel nut. Absolute crap design of wheel nut

Whilst those may have the same thread as landrover ones, the nut itself looks quite different. Far enough out that id be dubious of just fitting them.

Rover Metro wheel nuts look the same, I think the thin cover is stainless - it never seems to corrode.

Has always used anti seize grease on them and as such they all have some grease inside.

On MGB and Midget I've used solid stainless wheel nuts for years and never had a problem.
