I appreciate the offer mate. I did purchase 8 swivel ones, 4 of which are braked, on eBay last night for just £20.
If they turn out to be rubbish I’ll drop you a line. Thank you though
Well, following cutting out a wedge fillet and bending the joint closed I tried the Tig again.
I have to say I’m very pleased. I know thicker stuff is easier but wasn’t prepared for the finish!
Don’t think it’ll fall apart!:8
So next up was to estimate where the next 40mm wedge was being cut out to give me a 60mm gap for the 100mm tall castors. That should keep the COG of the stand low.
More tomorrow.
I wouldn't be wasting time trying to cut wedges out and bending it closed - just cut it at the correct angle so when you turn it over and re-align, you get the angle of dangle/offset you want.
Save time, material, faffing about and just as strong.
It’s something I do in work with stainless steel tray work and racking. Used to doing it.
You want a 45’ bend in 40mm box? Cut a 40mm wedge.
You are correct tho, less messing about. I can see what you mean.
If I can’t do it with measurements for an odd angle, I just take two pieces of the material, mark the pivot point on both pieces, slide one to the required angle, mark on both pieces where the back of the bend lands on the opposite side to the pivot, then open the set back to the start point and the difference between the back of the bend and start point is the width of the vee. Draw a line from both marks to the pivot point and cut.
Not sure that made sense but it does in my head.
I can do a drawing if it helps anyone.
Basically, mark the distance if the set on the floor. In this case it was two lines 60mm apart. Sit the piece of material on top at the finish point so each piece is above the lines drawn in the floor and mark where both upper and lower faces intersect.
Then using one mark as a pivot straighten up the top piece so it’s running parallel to the bottom piece and both marks line up.
Then you’ll see where the upper mark differed from the lower. In this case it’s roughly 40mm apart, so draw this line on to the bottom piece. You now have your width of vee.
Draw lines down from the 40mm bix down to the pivot point mark and cut out.
Managed to borrow another spit from a guy in Cardiff on the Mini Forum so I can copy the support frames. Tabulated it all and drawn them out them made a cut list. I’ll probably buy what I need, then it’s just the 40 and 50mm box section and stud bar so I can make it adjustable.
Today saw this. Just one section left and a flat bar across the front to support the castors.
