The Mini 1.4 engine?
Anyone have any comments on these?
Looks like it's a Peugeot lump anyway and likes to burn a bit of oil and munch on timing chains, the chain I can fix but I don't want to be repairing cylinder heads!

Our eldest had a 1.3 Yaris and the youngest has a 1.4tdi Polo. Both bought cheap at auction. Had to do a chain on the Yaris but the chain kit was only £85. Super tough car, he had a deer run out in front of him, straightened and reattached the bumper and carried on. The 1.4tdi Polo is a great car, really torquey. We have 2 of them and the 2007 onwards ones have the £35 or even free road tax.

Ignoring the original question, for a first car I'd be thinking of something with sensible insurance, good mpg, nice to drive, good reliability, cheap spares, and easy to find parts in a breakers (in case of any knocks).
Something sensible (boring !) reduces the risk of theft or wanting to be a boy racer.

I really rate the smaller Peugeot / Citroen rage (have had several 106s / Saxos / AXs and will happily but more or the newer versions in the future).
Keep us updated and hope you find something suitable

The eldest boy has a 1.0 Toyota Aygo which is the same car underneath.
Not bad really considering the French had a hand in it

Fiesta for me….no not my first car…but they are cheap to insure/tax and keep on the road….

My first was a 1965 C reg Mini 850…£140…it cost me as an apprentice..

Just looked at another Fiat 500...
More that a couple of dents, not mentioned.
Front nearside tyre totally bald on the inside edge.
Engine hunting really badly at idle.
Radio display not working
A/C not working.
Filthy inside.
Exhaust manifold bolts snapped.
Tatty junk again
I think I'm giving up on the Fiat's, every one I've looked at has been really rough, made of tin foil!
This one had exactly the same exhaust manifold bolts snapped as the last one, I think they're so low to the ground and the FickFit fitters are leaving the U bolts hanging down they keep getting smacked by speed humps

Yes it's amazing how many people can be transported home from a pub in a mini. Had a mate with a mini van not sure what the maximum load of revellers transported was but it looked hilarious

I trashed more than a few Coppers in my time!
I also had a Raleigh Aero Pro Burner ( a very high spec BMX at the time) I basically wore it out riding it to work when I was an apprentice then lobbed in in my mum's loft for 20 years.
£1200-£1500 these days...

Sorry for not filling in more details but I’ve been trying to find photos of the ‘black bullet’
so far I’ve got one of its good side, as you can see in spite of the abuse it still held up quite well. Even the dents on the roof from use as a step ladder blend in nicely. Quite frankly looking back I still wish I had it now, such a great thing.
The goat haunting came about because I used to work as an animal keeper at a theme park. One of the older goats flopped over, in the middle of peak season having a stroke I think. I had to scoop her up asap making my excuses before too many questions were asked by the punters. Emergency trip to the vets was needed, so in a rush bunged it in the back of the panda. Half way through the bizarre drive to the vets with some funny looks from other drivers, poor old ruby popped her clogs (and voided her bowels). No one wanted to sit in back seat after that…
I know I’ve got a photo of the chicken coop baboon incident but I don’t know where, I’ll keep looking.
Exhausts did tend to go at the flexi joint I remember driving around for a few weeks with a ratchet strap holding the centre pipe from dragging on the floor! Sounded good though…

I've been looking on Facebook marketplace and cant believe the scams on there! Probably half the 500's listed are scammers.

and the other half are owned by unintrested cretins that bought them as a fashion car and never lifted the bonnet or carried out any care or maintenance because its beneath them

Boys will boys no matter what anyone says, neither of mine had black boxes and I am a realist, I also know I was one of the worst people out there in my youth. I never give them grief about driving like tools, I just stress that they don't do it in places where everyone knows them.
