Today, I acquired a CNC 3018 pro mini CNC machine.
Not much more than a 300mmx180mm engraving machine, out of the box.
Naive me arsumed that it would work the same as a 3d printer:
Take a 3d(ish) model, convert to a CNC file. Put the file on an SD card, plug the SD card into the control board, hit "print" (or cut, or whatever), then watch it produce a reasonable facsimile of the original model...
Nope.
It needs to be permanently plugged into a windoze PC. (Via a USB cable) - it comes with a CH340 driver for windows, which I guess is the USB-serial interface chip on the controller board.
I don't have a spare windoze PC conveniently situated - although I do have a small Linux box.
(Not a raspPi, but what I bought to use until raspis are available again).
Can someone point me towards a beginner's tutorial - or give me the gist of what I need for a Linux install?
As per usual, I'm stymied in my google-fu by not knowing the search terms.
