BMC licensed the A series engine design to nissan who refined it and made it much better.
I always fancied a Cox Gtm or A Midas, they don't make things like that any more.
I've heard that in a few places but I don't see the A-Series in the CG engine - it's a very different animal. The CG has a 5-bearing crank, the main bearing caps are a single ladder casting, it has twin overhead cams, it's a 16v crossflow head and, and, and. I've been fairly deep into both engines and apart from the displacements of 998 and 1275 there's not much that looks similar.
Nissan may well have done something with the A-Series but I don't think the CG was a result of that.
The CG shows the result of 40-odd years of engine evolution. The 1380 A-Series was just getting close to 100bhp and it was at the extreme end of road engine (lumpy tickover, needed some revs to pull away, needed to be warm before it could realistically be driven etc.). The CG13 should make around 100bhp since I've dropped the catalyst and the intake ducting, it's still running the Micra injection so it's still in a state of tune that your grandmother could get in, start and drive to the shops once a week. I'd bet a pound that when it's back on the road it's more fuel efficient than my daily driver - even when driven hard.
Yes i agree CG13 is nothing like the A series, I was having a blond moment thinking back to the A type engine that used to get fitted into morris 1000s, They were based on BMC design but refined and had many updates even to 5 bearing crank, I wish i had kept the 1400 nissan engine and box i had as it made around 90 bhp and was not lumpy or loud.I've heard that in a few places but I don't see the A-Series in the CG engine - it's a very different animal.
