Even if it did and you could locate it to within 20 yds you're hardly likely to knock on the miscreant's door and risk getting beaten up, are you? And the police won't want to know......

Any half decent solvent removes that stuff, and you can normally spot it easily.

I'd be more worried about what you would do when it decided to take its bat home halfway through a job and decided not to turn itself on again

Seems an uneccesary layer of complication and potential failure for not much benefit, but maybe that's just me.

Plus it sounds a bit like wonky, which doesn't inspire confidence

One of my Mil tools is One Key (didn't cost me any extra as it happens). The extra speed controls are useful on rare occasions but do check your phone will run the app before going down this route.

I did look into how the tracking and disabling works. If I remember correctly the tracking and remote disable work every time a phone with the One Key app is within range of the tool. So if it got taken onto a site where there's likely to be a lot of people close with that app it's probably very effective, if it goes out in the sticks somewhere and never gets near people it's probably worthless.
As to how effective it is at making the tool scrap I couldn't find out, sometimes such things are easy to bypass other times not - though I expect Milwaukee to have made it pretty hard.

Cheers bill. That's good info. Nice to hear a proper review. Am I right in thinking that if you didn't want to use the one key thing you can just turn it off and the tool is just like any other Milwaukee tool?

It's a compact impact wrench that has it. So far I have not actually got the app (wrong phone) so am
using the settings that it left the factory with. Out of the box using it the only difference to my other ones is it having four power levels, handy for putting things like wheelnuts on loose before tightening properly with a bar, or to do things in stages.
Using the app would allow me to set the power settings to whatever I want and allow the tracking and disabling should the worst happen.

Being able to slow a drill down for big bits in metal would be great, though I don't know if it would always have enough power?

I take it setting the RPM in the app is the same as adjusting with the trigger, only it'll be fixed RPM however much you squeeze the trigger?

Still got variable trigger control, you are just setting the maximum speed/power.

I don't mess about so I've replaced my drill with the above. New Milwaukee fuel brushless drill with ONE-KEY™.
First impressions it's a normal drill. A nice drill but no different baring weight and size to my old trusty snap on and Bosch drills.
2 gear speeds, torque settings etc very nice. Soooo let's explore this one key thing a bit. I have the iPhone so the app went straight on no problem and it connects straight to your tool. The tracking thing isn't that great. Your phone needs to be with in 100ft of it to work which is ok if it's literally just been nicked but not that useful. Now I like the tool lock. You don't need internet to use it or change it you just open the app select your tool and hit lock. Bingo.. no wally is borrowing and abusing your new power tools. That's a quality feature.
Custom modes. Not got that far yet but I'll have a look shortly and give an honest opinion.

ive noticed quite a few brands are going this way. I was watching a dewalt video for a cable crimper that you could plug into your pc and download info like how many cycles it has made that day etc. Handy if you are paying someone per connection etc
ive also noticed that they also indicate when a tool needs servicing etc, so you know exactly when it needs doing. what they didnt say was whether the tool stopped working at that point and needed resetting by the dealer during the service.
i love a gadget me, and would go one key if replacing my milwaukee stuff, as they bought out most of it after i had purchased the standard version

i have several "tiles", i think they work in much the same way. If you loose one then you put out an alert and if your tile goes near anyone with the app then it will alert them

i think a lot of this tracking is aimed at bigger companies with lots of employees in close proximity, rather than the theft aspect.

Playing with these custom modes and I can't see a gimmicky thing about it. We've been using these tools with 2 speed settings now for years and never really thought twice about it but we really are missing out. Infinite speeds from 120- 2500 rpm on 4 different settings
Same with the torque settings on the driver
Sure there are silly gimmicks like how bright you set the light and light delay time etc but been able to set your own rpm on your hand drill is brilliant.
It's trial and error to start with and I've plumbed in some numbers on each mode and I'll give em a try out/tweak where needed. Once set that's it. Shouldn't need to faff about with it again just make holes. It does also have modes that they have written up for certain things too. I'll have a nose at them another day.
