milling on small lathe..

Im trying to set my lathe up for some very light milling..

Got an er25 collet holder and waiting for collets to come, need to sort a drawbar, 6mm studbar..should see to that.

got an angle plate and vertical slide cobbled together, still looking for a little machine vice if anybody can help.

what im struggling with is types of cutter. I have two little jobs I need to do..

some flat bottom holes 10mm dia 1mm deep in m/s plate...

some 8mm slots across the end of some 20mm aluminium square bar, 20mm deep.

will slot drills be ok for both? Was thinking hss cobalt as these lathe tools work so well in my lathe, also what type of fitting for er25 slot, threaded etc, I know it will be a compromise but not that difficult to do...

Slot drills will be fine, as for the shanks I won't really matter for era collets plain or threaded.

I would go for 2 flute cutters for aluminium as these don't block up so easily.

I think you will need to use slot drill as end mills can't usually be plunged as the don't cut in the centre. Are you sure the drawbar is 6mm? My drawbars for my lathe and mill are both imperial although I know there are metric ones about. As Spark plug says it won't matter which shanks but the threaded ones obviously wont hold on the thread as they are made for a different type of holder.

Yeah definitely 6mm its only a 1mt, so very light cuts I think....

ive got a fair few from there as well as there hss drills ect its either them or cromwell tools but there prices are big $$$$$

get yourself to scorton autojumble 3d saturday in the month . sometimes u see them there along with a lot of other tools ,. just get there early

I went there lasrt summer, wasnt too impressed to be honest. Lots of people saying the same, that ebay had killed autojumbles, there was quite a lot of new cheap tools but nothing of any quality....pass there regularly whilst out cycling.

u need to be there before 7 am just the same as ruffoth otherwise all the dealers beat u to it some days its crap other days u can get real good scoops half the price of eblag . i scored a harrison L5 from ruffoth for 350 quid with 3 and 4 jaw chucks in good nick 2 years ago
