Miller Migmatic 171

After several months of procrastination and asking questions on the forum i finally made my mind up and purchased a Migmatic 171 to replace my SIP130. Wow, what a different.... I am very happy. I got it for an all in delivered price of £499 from www.weldingsuppliesdirect.co.uk. Top man, very helpfull and friendly. My only slight niggle about the Migmatic is..., actually i dont have any

Nice bit of kit, my only worry for you is if it breaks down, the company you have brought it from works from his house, he has no workshop and no sevice engineers if there is a problem you have to send the machine back to Miller.

Really, you get the impression from his website that it's a multi-national!
You shouldn't get much trouble from the machine AndyHR, I've sold/used that model & they are reliable

Andy, what amps do the Miller 171's go down to? I've been tempted to get a Miller for a while now as they really are nice machines to weld with. But I need one that preferably goes down to about 20A

30amps I think Chris. Not as nicely built as the Portamig, check the weight... 33Kg, Portamig 185: 48Kg.

I think you have to think, what if it goes wrong? if you buy a portamig that old git at weldequip will give you after sales service and look after you, if you buy a miller what if you need help?

I'm not sure that would be much of an issue. My dad has a Miller at work, the fab shop down the road has several and the engineering training centre that I go to has one in every MIG welding bay. It seems that spares must be widely available, otherwise why would they be so common in industrial workshops?

The minimum amps was actually quite difficult to find out. Its not stated on anything Miller produce, but 30 amps is the lowest.

The Miller machine is not american made they are Italian, they used to be made in the same factory as Butters and Hobart, the Portamig would be the better option because the unit has a proven track record with forum members, yeas Miller have service back up but the website you where thinking of buying it from ?

Just to confirm that Welding Supplies Direct do not operate from a home address they are based at.

There are several miller agents in the UK... my local supplier being one, they hire and service in house.... & the weight difference was the reason I ended up with my 171 over the portamig... not a huge difference i know but if you have to pick it up.......
