out of the brush?

I've always found, no matter what paint I use, that removing excess paint with bog roll, then rubbing some washing up liquid into the bristles & rinsing with water, then soaking up as much water from the bristles with more bog roll, before dumping the brush in solvent, works wonders.

As said above, pull off as much as you can with a rag - which you are likely doing, not heard of the washing up liquid trick, might give that a go.

What I've been doing recently which I picked up off the Mrs who paints a lot in olis, is to not let the paint dry on the brush between coats which saves a lot of messing around with solvents until final coats are done and final cleaning of the brushes. Essentially air tight the brush with a bag and band so as not to let the paint dry and just reuse at next coat, if warmish the bristles still stay pliable - not tried this with Tractol mind.

I used to do that but they're mum's brushes and she told me off!

Never thought of cleaning the brush with a rag though, always just scraped off as much as possible on the side of the tin.

Paint has sort of arrived, they sent two tins of undercoat and no topcoat.

I emailed Smith & Allen, told them of their mistake and no questions asked they sent out a tin of topcoat, no mention of returning the spare undercoat.

Here's how it looks, next to (Quite a bad sample of) the blue I did my drill in.



I think it looks pretty good. It's RAL7045 if anyone's interested, the blue is RAL5011, the dark grey is the undercoat

I generally wrap brushes tightly in clingfilm between coats.

There's a lot of filling I could have done but I ran out of filler so I couldn't sort it even if I wanted to.

The dark grey undercoat is far more suitable than the light grey I used on my drill

I'm on the fence about refitting this, the water makes a huge mess (the guards are pretty useless) and the wheel barely turns fast enough to make a spark, I suspect it should have a 2 pole motor not the 4 pole that was in it when I got it. Water will also of course rust the tables which I'd like to avoid if possible.

How many HP? I have an old 230V 2 pole motor here it is a big old thing but it is only 3/4 HP which I suspect will not be enough.

I think the old one was only 1/2HP but it did get bogged down pretty easily so maybe I should go bigger.

I've got quite a stash of spare motors to have a rummage through but potentially would be interested.

There you go, tis heavy, it came with my Drummond and was replaced with a modern 4 pole motor which does not look as good but gives the old lathe an easier time. It was running fine two years ago and I can test the insulation if you are interested.



I don't fancy getting the pulley off so yours for £30 inc. pulley, I can make it a wooden crate but you would need to arrange collection from SE23

Ooh I do like the look of that. I'm going back to uni on Wednesday so I probably won't be using it until the summer. If something local doesn't turn up before then, I'll have it (unless you need it out the way sharpish). It looks like there's a lot of gravity in it so shipping won't be cheap.

I've been slowly working on this when I can't think of anything better to do. It's all assembled now, I had to keep lifting the tray off the column to file down the filler I'd put on, the tray wasn't sitting low enough so bolt holes didn't line up.


I haven't put the grinding wheel on yet because I don't know how fast it should spin, the spindle is going at 2100 RPM at the moment but there's another pulley I could use to go slower. I've just seen you can get 10" bench grinders which turn at 2950 rippums so I think I'll be fine, just need to make some blotters.

There's a few places I could touch up chipped paint, and a few more I could scrape off excess paint but that can wait another six months I think. I'll make a wooden frame to lift it a bit higher too, the tables are about 32 inches off the floor at the moment, that's a bit too low even to use seated.

Does anyone know if there's any special solvent to get this stuff (Tractol 816) out of the brush? White spirit doesn't do nearly as good as job as it does on gloss.

Cellulose thinners will do the job, cheap and works well on any solvent based paint I can think of.

xylene thinners. celly wont do it ive tried
