Just along from me spotted a man scything around the local,milestone,went to sus him out ,he’s from the society that looks after them. Could be a new Guest publication for Have I got news for you!
So I told him I’ve stopped clearing the undergrowth as was worried it would get stolen,which he understood but nevertheless continued onward to his next one,he walks miles doing this,a volunteer,I’m in 2 minds,sad if they’re not visible,yet with all these tv shows......?

Without wishing to derail your original post, that's such a sad indictment of the times we live in.

There is truly something wrong with a world where we have to hide things away that we're put there for a reason and have survived for generations, because people think they would look better in their gardens than in their proper place.

Right, rant over, and appologies for derailing your thread. I'm off to join the Milestone Society, I suspect that there's lots of like minded wierdos there and I'll fit right in.

erm they pinch stone from our area all london bound

from stone roofs to stone flags and stone wall capppings all pinched from peoples gardens in vans

police arnt interested its just a crime number report and claim it off your house insurance

they also know wheres its going but dont do much about it to be honest

Having worked in London for the last 30+ years I can honestly say I've never seen a piece of stone brought to site that wasn't brand new. I don't know why you think everything that goes missing from around the country ends up in London.

In Alfreton there was a sculpted dragon finial on the top of a gable end of the roof ridge, it was solid stone and weighed about 1cwt. It disappeared one night.

Quite often happened around where my mum lives outside Halifax.

In broad daylight - small tipper wagon like the council uses, men in council looking overalls, cones placed down to keep traffic out and pedestrians away, and away went all the stone flags from the pavement.

As it all looked "official", no-one said anything. Which you might have thought they would, as it is private, non-council maintained road.

I can remember loads of stone road signs here, the T shape ones that had angled faces with a distance from and too the next town carved into the faces. Can only think of one now and pretty sure it has been moved to a different spot on the same road.

No, stone theft happens. I just clicked through the whole first page of results in your link above though and the word 'London' doesn't appear in any of them that I can find.
