They look oldThey’re Truweld/ T&R Welding products
Here’s the box...quite old so the writings fadedView attachment 158757
Theyre not ideal but they should stick them togetherMy vertical stick welds suck.
Not sure if using the tig as a stick welder would be better than this old Pickhill Giant.
Anyway...found some 308L tig rods (used to get someone in to do the welding hence why there’s random consumables hiding in cupboards etc). I’d hardly touched steel with the tig, bought it for alu but my first attempt with the tig vertical is better than my best stick attempt.
So...will these 308l rods do the job?
would 3.2 dia 309l rods make much difference?
I've only ever used 2.5 rods since digging out the oil cooled welder earlier this year and not sure what difference 3.2 would make. Was going to buy some to try but smallest pack is £60 odd. Bit much for them to likely lie in the cupboard for years again
If you use mild steel wire the weld will probably be stronger than both the mild steel and the 304L......but it will also be more brittle.....I dont mean brittle like cast iron just by comparison to the other two.........freeze it and it may snap with a british standard hammer blow
When you say “freeze it” do you mean the temperature it could get down to outside in winter (the truck will obv be outside) or do you mean in a lab with l nitrogen or something extreme?
Used 309l electrodes for the important bit but Have got some old/unused bolt holes to weld up on the frame. Have the 308l rods there but tempted to just standard mig it...it’s getting painted anyway
