MIL toilet broken... Help!

The MIL rang last night asking if I can fix her toilet it seems the dual flush valve is constantly letting water through as it's pouring into the bowl even when the cistern is nearly empty. She sent some photos and it looks like a close coupled WC, will any of the Toolfix / Screwstation valves fit or does this look like something different? I don't want 15 trips to the shops tonight,

I did ours recently, screwfix options, Fluidmaster was more expensive but solid and well rated, but it was just too bulky to fit the tiny cistern, had to go with the cheapo Torbeck all plastic job as was more compact

If you don't want to strip the toilet that will twist and pull out to order a direct swap

If you don't mind taking it apart then get a Fluidmaster, best ones available currently

I had a dual flush have exactly the same issue and emptied my well while we were out one day. We had family staying and I had forgot to mention the valve sometimes got stuck. They went to the toilet before we went out and it must have been pumping all day.

Thanks @Kayos I'll take it out to have a look before I buy a new one.
Turns out she's been flushing the toilet with old bath water for ages so it might just have got stuck.

I've never struggled, but I was never scared of breaking them as I would just go to option B

Little tip if you buy one, get yourself a new sealing washer to go between cistern and the pan, one I got didn’t come with one. Pain when they leak after assembling it all.

Another problem is the plate which couples the cistern to the pan. They're very often rusty. Also they come in two sizes, as do the doughnuts.

Just take an oscillating tool with you...sometimes these things put up a fight and need to be shown who is boss!

that looks the same as my bog, luckilly everything in my house came from screwfix , a mere 1.5 miles from me.
i had the same prob and got a new valve thingy from screwfix

Well I went round to have a look and the flush valve did indeed just twist off. This revealed a 1" plastic lid that had come off the scented oil toilet fresh thing she had in there! It had jammed the valve slightly open.
An easy fix that took 5 minutes and earned me a nice bottle of red and some brownie points!

It may be that the large sealing washer at the bottom of the mechanism has developed water rash, where small sacs form in the silicone rubber from which the washer is made, and fill with water, creating local bulges and preventing a good flush seal. Puncturing these little blisters with a sewing needle sorts that problem out for a good while, and can be quite therapeutic ;-) Just for clarity, this is not the soft spongy washer between cistern and bowl, but the washer that forms part of the flush mechanism.

I had exactly this on mine. Did waht you suggest too, and it worked. Strangely, it happened again recently, both times after having the water off.
These things really are pants, and do they save any water in the long run?
