As I say, as long as threads And length is right I'm not bothered about taper angles or recesses etc...

I doubt I will be able to provide the matching threads though as it would involve shipping a £400 digital rifle scope and a £130 135mm lens.

I am looking around for material in work at the moment and am eyeing up the lathe...not sure if I would have time to knock it out on break or not though

I get 2 x 40 mins but can't leave the part in the lathe between breaks

Only bar stick I can find I all is 100mm dia to do a lot of turning to get down to size

I would think you would struggle to do it in 40mins with the tapers and threads, presuming it is a manual machine of course.
You would really have to do it in two steps anyway so maybe do the external in one break and the internal in the other.

On the off chance that this part already exists, does anyone know of an m34x1 to m42x1 lens adapter? I can only find m34x0.5

Depending on the lathe it shouldn't take long to reduce the dia down, my CNC is a lovely Tarnow (Polish iron) and is solid but the smaller manual lathe (Colchester Triumph) can not take so much but on alu I could easily take 4mm off the dia per pass with it.

Last post should have been 4mm depth of cut, even a Triumph is not that flimsy
Biggest problem with Alu is unless you have inserts for Alu then you need to keep it flooded or the insert will get build up in short order, grade of alu can also make a big difference as well, cast machines lovely though.
If you struggle to get it done give me a shout and I will see what I can do, I don't like making sloppy threads and hence why I like to have some sort of master to compare to but chances are a bought adapter would be pretty sloppy in the fit anyway.

I'm wondering if I want it done in delrin actually, or some other decent plastic. It's being mounted into plastic threads anyway so won't compromise strength and it's only the weight fin the lens to hold...

I can get an adapter made but it's 45 plus vat and shipping g and I e never dealt with the guy before.

We shall see what's what when all the parts turn up

Delrin or Acetal (more or less the same thing) is lovely to machine. I use it all the time as it is used in rudder bushes etc for fishing boats, low water absorption compared to other plastics.

I also use it in some parts I make for a company that does underwater testing equipment for the North Sea. Few pics of the parts I make from Acetal.

I have also gone off the idea of the taper...easiest way to machine would be 50mm bar bored out and turned for m34x1 on on end, bored out to 40 then put 10mm of threads in it at 42x1

If doing it on a manual the tapers would be the things that take the longest time as you would need to set the compound slide although the threading would also take a wee while. On a CNC neither would be an issue, they are great for things like that One offs take time to draw and CAM but once that is done the actual part takes no time at all.

Well I've got plenty to think about...the mrs is fed up of me talking about lenses and scopes so maybe she will buy me a lathe to shut me up haha I can dream

The wee Conect Lathe (Myford ML10) I retrofitted would have been good for things like this but I pulled the control off it for use on the Plasma table I am building and gave the lathe to a friends son to get it out of my road.
Here it is doing a 2mm pitch thread in steel, quite impressive for such a wee lathe.

Well I have searched and searched but I cannot find what I need.

Apparently the 34x1.0 thread Ian onlynused on zeiss steritar lenses but there is no adapter to m42 lens fitment

From all info I can find on newest model it is 34x1.0 male thread only difference between new and old is old was .75 pitch not 1.0 pitch

Is your lens the same focal length as the one for the guy who did the drawing? You say 50mm overall but the drawing shows 29mm face to face so 39mm overall.

Is it worth keeping an eye out for scrap items which have the same thread and then canabalising them to make up what you're after?
