Migatronic Automig 273 Three phase to Single phase???

Been offered the above machine at a bargain price, I know that some of the Migatronic stuff can be switched internally from three phase to single phase, is this one of them??

We have such machines in POland (bester, lincoln), but... whenever you go to 1ph, the power goes lower as well.... generally, transformer units run very poor on 1ph, better go for inverter

In my 40 plus years of experience, there are very few welders that can be run from either 3 phase or single phase. Normally, the only sets that can accommodate this, are those that are designed to run from either 415V 2 phase or 240V 1 phase. This only requires a different tapping on the main transformer to change voltage, so is fairly simple to achieve. Three phase machines have 3 distinct windings on their transformers and then 3 phase rectifiers to change the voltage into DC. It would be impossible to arrange this system to work from 1 phase.

I see a lot of posts that ask if a three phase machine can be run from 220/240V mains, as it states 220/240V on the rating plate. This would normally be older machines, where they were designed to run from either 415V 2 or 3 phase, or the old European system (and USA) that have 110V mains systems, which works out to 220/240V when used as 2/3 phase systems. It does not mean that they can be run from 220/240V single phase. You should also bear in mind, that as a rule of thumb, the current input roughly doubles when you halve the input voltage. Bottom line, for those considering buying a second hand machine that may be 2 or 3 phase and appears to run from 240V, do you have the available supply current??

It should be noted that strictly speaking, the terminology for using 2 phases of a three phase system, is 415V Single phase but I find it more understandable to use the term 415V 2 phase. Also, as bc30se stated above, there are some new inverter machines (Miller spring to mind) than are heavily electronic and can be used on a wide variety of supply voltages and configurations.
