mig wire transfer?

has any one transfer big spool to small spool and if so how did you manage it?
seen a couple of videos but looking for something simpler.
I'll probably only do it the once.

Sell it and buy a smaller one.

Or, rather than faffing about trying to make up a winding contraption just make up a holder to sit the big drum on and feed it into the back of your machine via a hole the correct size for a blanking grommet

I cut a hole in the back of my SIP, shoved a bit of nylon tube in as a guide and insulator, put the big reel on a bit of tube stood on two axle stands, and fed the wire through to the rollers. Worked pretty well, but moving the welder around is now a bit more complicated . . . and if you have it cracked up and speeding along, when you let go the trigger, the momentum in the big reel keeps it turning a touch, meaning slack wire.

I didn't want to hack a hole in the back of my new GYS welder, so using the same tube and stands to hold the big reel of stainless, wound wire, slowly, onto a smaller reel (in-fact, on top of wire on a half used reel of mild) held in my little lathe - used a stick to guide it - I did not want my fingers anywhere need what would effectively be a powered cheese-cutter!

I was going to reply to your other post about getting a smaller welder and to point out that 5kg spools won't be a 1/3 the price of a 15kg spool (more like 1/2!) But guess you figured that out .
Any way ref your question (no I have not transfer from a big spool to small spool) if you read this post

(it is initially about mig tip ware) it might go some way to explaining why you would cause yourself a lot of grief transferring between spools due to the "cast" and helix" that is in the wire once wound on the original spool.
There was a better explanation of "cast" and "helix" by TechnicAl but I could not find it.

thanks for the reply. for what they cost and the amount of time I'll be using its not worth faffing about.
now I'll have to decide which wire to get.
I've always use Esab but can't find any in 5 kgs at the mo.
Ilike to spend my pay pal money for stuffs rather than use my bankers card.
oh and thanks mike.
after seeing a video of gys demo I've decided to go for the 150.
I need a euro torch so that I can fit a 3 mtr torch due to my pace maker.

Helo John, I have always used Lincoln or EWM wire, Both are very good. Cost a little more than white box wire, But 5Kg reel for occasional use will last ages,

Any suggestions as to a way to go reel to reel with tension on both?

I was thinking a replacement wire motor and tension weeks then 3d printing a shoe(guide) to keep the new wire on
