Mig welding using TIG gloves

Can anyone tell me if there is any reason why you shouldn't wear TIG gloves whilst MIG welding?

If its only low power stuff itll be fine.

I often wear normal riggers for low amp stuff.

I almost always use TIG glooves for MIG work, easy handling with TIG glooves, very much so when trying to place scrolls in a railing, i find it to hard to acurately position stuff with MIG glooves. Having said that if im welding plate or long runs MIG glooves are better

Me too. But then its normally car bodywork. If you're running your hand along the job while you're welding a line and its too hot to hold against, its probably time to stop and have a rest, to avoid distortion on the panel.

When at work, I often got to weld 500mm long welds on 10mm+ steel profiles. Because I'm kinda lazy, I usually hold one hand on the torch handle and the other one just in front of the handle (the torch itself is water-cooled). I can promise you my hands get hot, even with thick MIG gloves.

On the other hand, if you hold the supporting hand further away from the melting pool, you should be fine.

i hate using welding gloves, i feel they make it hard 2 grip anything such as a 12mm bolt. i never use them.

I'm curious... don't you get a UV burn on your hands from the arc?

When I was a kid, I did some stick welding (I was building an airplane, actually), and didn't even think about the UV. So I left my shirt unbuttoned because it was summer and hot, and got one whopper of a sunburn. But I always wore gloves...

no mate no uv burns on hands. ive been stick weldeing form about 13 and now im 17 and have been mig welding for a year or two. welding every evening at work and have never had my hands sunburnt altough i have got my face burnt once or twice when tacking box section frames but now i have invested in an automatic mask so no more of that. my boss did get his chest sunburnt the same way you did. but these things happen lol

You might not feel the burning but it's still damaging your skin! I burnt my knee quite badly a couple of weeks ago, had a rip in my jeans and didn't even think about it. UV can do some serious damage including Melanoma (skin cancer!) Gloves are pretty much essential for welding. The skin on your hands is quite hardy stuff, lets face it, it's exposed pretty much all the time but you shouldn't really take risks with such high intensity UV .

You where gloves too to protect your hands from cuts and all that nasty stuff...and it keeps your hands a bit smoother when wearing gloves... I know there's guys who think it's really though to say: hey, i don't wear gloves, thats for girls! (and yes, i always wear my gloves) think about the consequenses too! Not only the uv, but next time you give your girlfriend a backrub with those rough paws she will scream all-right.....but not in exctasy i'm afraid.....

Like wozzah mentioned, it may not be doing visible damage, but it will in the long term.

Think you're right Hitch, even with my gloves on i burn myself every day ( but hey, i'm just a girl....)

Almost any glove will give protection-some
better than others but prolonged bare hand
exposure to an electric arc should be avoided
as it can cause problems in later life.

would of liked to see cutting down the mezz frame work i was on the other week with no gloves on was rusty as hell bits of slag flyin every where

I use Tig gloves most of the time and is brilliant for light work on the mig. I find that you can handle most jobs with these gloves. To my mistake i used these gloves on a larger machine doing heavy welding work and injured myself, but other than that i have covered both light and medium fabrication with tig gloves.

As an example (not welding though), I was wearing rigger gloves during grinding some car bodywork. As many will know, you need to get yourself and the grinder in some funny positions, at times, to reach stuff. I inadvertently cut right through the glove and put a slight mark on my finger, I'm sure if I hadn't been wearing the gloves, I'd have possibly ground my finger off!
