Why not get a jump lead and link the 2 pieces of metal together?

I think GrahamGKD had it nailed on the first page with the link to same wire feeder. It uses the block with a grove along it to form the equivilent of the wire liner or brass tube that's found in other welders. I assume that the op may have not had the welder from new so may have been missing from the outset. Workd where the metal is good and on a bench but as soon as the tourch puts some resistance (slight bend) then the wire pushes back and with no guide jumps out from the roller or bunches up "birdnest". If the car part being welded was nice and clean steel, less problem to strike arc. It does look like the part that the clamp is on connects to the righthand side of weld area via a bolt/pivot?

Thanks guys, backing off the pressure on the wire feeder defiantly helped! as well as cleaning up the area a bit more and repositioning the ground clamp.

because if you moved the brass pipe up to the rollers the other half would then not be able to be screwed on properly, would like to know for future ref thanks N

There is no brass pipe, the gun just needed to be pushed in to the welder which then closed up that gap so the brass nozzle you see is flush with the end of the wire guide.

thanks but in the picture you sent, have you unscrewed anything off the wire feed unit ?

Nothing has been unscrewed.
