MIG Welding in I-Beams?

I would like to know if MIG can penetrate I beams 3/4" thick?

i own a miller CP300 and S21E..

I am not familiar with the Miller CP300 but assume it is 300 amps, should be no problem........but how much experience have you? that would be my only query.

A 300a machine will have no problem whatsoever fusing a weld on 3/4" material, but any welds will have to be prepped correctly.

A 300A machine would be capable of this thickness but as said above how experienced/good are you?
If these form ANY type of structural element you need to be certain what you are doing and preferably or legally ( in some circumstances) coded.

Most metal of that dimension and type is welded by the arc process.

I am not sure that the last statement is correct! I am quite sure that in the right hands a mig welder is more than capable and just as strong and a lot easier.

Oh, okay... I think you will find, that the majority that is produced in a workshop enviroment is welded with GMAW.

There are a couple of fairly large fab shops local to me that produce structural steelwork only, and weld everything with MIG. I can't remember seeing a stick set in either of them in over twenty years.

You guys obviously know more than me on this and i stand corrected.
I have never been in a large structural fab shop and only seen such work done on site...in a port...by smaw (stick arc) process.This is also the way large scale ship repairs are done and i see them done reguarly.

You are correct in that..........most site work and ship repairs are carried out in the elements so Mig is not ideal as the shielding gas blows away.

At least it can do, how many of you guys have used your little migs in the garage with the door open and got porosity and thought what the hell is going on here............I was one when I first started.
The last job I had in the UK before moving here we had a welding bay with an air circulation extraction system and one particular welding bay the unit used to cause havoc with the gas. We often used to switch it off.
