MIG welding in a shed

Would love to have bigger but the base is 8x6 and we plan on moving soon so not going to invest here now. A new workshop / garage is in list for next place. This is just for now to get the practice in so trying to make do.

If you get this sorted, use the space & time to prefab the one for your next house, you can make panels from angle,
skinned with sheeting, and stack them away. When you get to the new place, drill some holes, sonotubes with concrete,
and start bolting it together.

Hi all. Is it possible with the right safety precautions to successfully weld inside a wooden shed. Or is the only precaution weld outside? Intention would be to just take the opportunity to practice on some 0.8mm material. Thanks

hi Andy, we asked our colleagues about this and they said that this is NOT recommended, but if really necessary it can be done, but with proper safety precautions - cover the walls, floor and any other wood surface with fire-resistant materials such as welding blanket or fireproof boards, make sure you have a fire extinguisher rated for electrical and chemical fires within your reach and also have a bucket of sand nearby as an additional precaution. And of course, keep proper ventilation.

Thanks for all responses. I carried out my first welding today. Yep, practice is king. Had fire protection all round, bucket of sand ready as well as hose if needed. However all was good. I may still remove the wood floor at some point to help reduce risk further.

Its not so easy to set plywood properly ablaze with welding heat as you might think. You will scorch it or even char it locally but it won't go straight up in flames unless its got flammable stuff on it. We use it (scrap plywood) as protection to avoid damaging concrete floors when burning on site if the floor is to be retained in good condition.

Much more likely to set fire to your bin/rags/clothes than thebshed IMO.

Damp the floor just slightly if you like then any small sparks will go right out when they land. Keep some water in a bottle or small bucket handy and check the area shortly after stopping then an hour later.

A garden pressure sprayer full of water is a useful item, quick & easy, but doesn’t soak everything. Handy when welding cars as well.
