Hello Folks, I am look after the Russian submarine which is in the River medway at Rochester, we are in the process of preparing the submarine for painting and have come across areas where we need to put some steel plate over the top of holes that are in the outer casing of the ballast tanks
Originally ( in 1967 ) the ballast tank steel varied between 6 & 8mm thick, as it is no longer operational! I was thinking we can weld 3 or 4mm plate straight over the top as they. The inner pressure hull of the submarine is 25mm thick and fingers crossed we do not need to touch that for a while yet.
The submarine is moored mid river so we have to run everything from Generators and the largest one we have is 5kva , Friends have told me that the largest gas less welder ( river can be windy) we can use with that generator is something like the Clarkes 110 EN model which is 100amp .
So my questions are: do you think that the 110EN can handle 3-4mm plate & could the generator cope with a larger model,
Have gone for the mig as I have a friend that has done a bit of welding in the past with a mig so is happy to give it a go and he has plenty of free time ! .
From what I have read Arc welders do not work well from a generator, as you can imagine there are lots of bits of welding on the submarine and I am sure it will prove very useful so I am hopeful of a solution
Thanks
John
