Where are you from tomyour just down the road from me from memory ,, if you cant get things sorted ,, give me a shout
but you will get there .
Which one do I turn up
I don't live near tom im from wexford IrelandLike I said, I'm not familiar with your machine, but it looks like the controls are "Fine Volts", "Coarse Volts", and "wire-feed" speed.
I'd put the "coarse" control up at least one notch for a start, as being in the lower half of the settings (of the available 270A) won't be enough for 5mm steel.
I'm going by the symbols, here - as I can't quite read the writing from the photo.
And what's the other control with all the dots - a spot weld timer?
I reckon if @tom2207 is nearish to you, you should give him a call, as a few one-to-one pointers will move things along much more quickly than random experimentation.
It's a good offer - it'll speed your learning up no end, and you'll have the general hang of it after a much shorter time t annnnhan would be possible otherwise.
But for now, just turn it up!
You didn't post any photos of the rear of the weld, but when it's fully penetrating (which it won't be at the moment) you'll see the weld (not just the heat-signature) almost bleeding through to the other side of the steel.
All the Best,
CJ

Thanks for adviceNow, that's a downer, ain't it?
I'm about as familiar with Geography, as I am with your welder's controls, then!
I just assumed Wexford was a fairly short drive from Comber - I've just looked, and now realise the distance!
There might be someone more local who can get you up & running, though - if you were around Bristol or Somerset way, I'd have this sorted already - but that's easy to say from way down here!
Just keep at it (and turn it up, too!) and it won't take very long.
With regards to the wire-feed speed - when the power setting is about right, try turning the wire-feed right up until you can feel it "pushing against" or "stabbing at" the work-piece - and then back it off until you can no longer feel it ramming into the steel (and then maybe a wee bit more!) and you should be about right.
If the wire starts burning back to the tip as you weld, you've probably turned the wire-feed down too far.
It's sometimes a bit tricky, as you have to be welding while you adjust the wire-feed speed setting - but I'm guessing it would work doing shortish runs, and then making any adjustments in-between those short runs.
All the Best,
CJ
I tot i was going to fastslow down a wee bit , and a tad less wire , let the puddle actually form then watch it move as you do ,,, who cares if it burns through , your only practising ,, get an idea of the look , sound and feel of burning through.
try a lap joint , its much more fun and youve a couple of bits of plate to hand
It's hardI tot i was going to fast
