Mig welder problem

Hi guys, I'm using a welder at a friends place and its doing funny things. I'm trying to teach kids how to weld too and it's not making it easy. When the shroud touches the piece it's arcing even before pulling the trigger. I know it's not ideal to touch the shroud off the piece but for first timers I usually do it a way just to get them started, but as I say the welders playing up any ideas?

clean inside the shroud and it sounds like its a permanent live model

Pull the shroud, you may have spatter in the insulator or the diffuser.

Which model/make MIG is it?

Live torch? and yes, keep that shroud and contact tip clean of spatter is this a gas/gasless welder?
