I would say even if you can get away with manufacturing recommendations of lower gen sets it's not a saving in the long run as your talking about running costs. A smaller generator is going to chew it's way through more fuel reving it's ar#e off to cope with the power of the welder than a bigger one ticking over nicely and not struggling. Always aim higher I say. The other thing is if you buyer a smaller one based on the recommendations you read and it is not up to the job and keeps tripping out that's a lot more money wasted there. Best to work it out for yourself and then you know your safe

A caddy mig is 200 amps so again I would suggest 12kva for that to run happily.

look up ESAB recommendation its 7.5 kva. 12 KVA kit is seriously a lot bigger and should turn the user towards a Mosa or similar, I don't know if a 12kva is something you could put in the back of a van say? I suggest you are into a tow behind or about £150 a day hire

I know what they say on it and at half power it will run but even the maths contradicts it without assuming the in rush or power factor. Amps x volts let's say your running 160amps at 25 volts then yes it will do it and be good enough but that is assuming usage. If I had to recommend I would do it based on max output of the machine and double it which I know is unrealistic which is why I use a power factor of 60%. Yep big gen sets ain't portable but I've seen some welders really struggling and others cope well. It's down to the user to decide if they want to take the risk and work it out more accurately based on the current they will actually use then they can step down.

Just think your missing the fact that some new plants draw seriously less power to produce high output. That is just ESAB recommendation for 200amp caddy with full use. Lets face it they are asking for trouble to understate requirements.

Be carful with cheap small generators, they have very dirty spiky outputs with poor waveform. For a decent supply you need a gen set with AVR and governor control.

bigger the genny the better, but practicality avalablity, and transportablity dose bite you in the ****.

takeing the mosa units for exampel, hondas 13hp lump will give you 5.5 KW ( 6.6 kva ) and weighs in at + 80 KG go the kholer engine you can have a littel more 6.5 kw ( 8.15 kva )but thats 105 KG. i wouldn't want a caged genny that any bigger tbh.

there ae a few genny with the big honda gx620 they give you neraly 10kw bt at 160 kg stuff that you just have to face upto it that it's genset time.

the littel kubota diesel powerd 15kw gensets you can push about are possobly an option ? after that it big case gennys and tow behind

What I have is a mosa .Honda gx390. Nsm mr100 alternator which is 7 kva. A lot of the different generators I looked at had the Honda engine and the same make alternator veryin models. The alternator company where not helpfully in there spec. But the several makes of generator which had good reviews had the nsm alternator. The inverts rtec welder needs min 6 kava geney , and is generator friendly whatever that means. Just went with what they said. I run a 100w incandescent bulb all the time as this is suppose to help with possible spikes I think. Haven't blown 1 yet dosent seem to dim when using geney nor dose the geney seem to boy when striking ark
