So, my attempts at mig welding ali went OK whilst I had the use of a 250A mig to connect my hand held spool gun to. But the welder was an oldy in for repair, and has since gone back to its owner. My efforts to find a suitable (ie cheap used) single phase fed machine have drawn a blank. So it’s got me wondering about using an oil filled oxford type, with a rectifier in a box with a fan, some caps etc. So this then brings up the question of transformer characteristics - and how the mig might differ from the oil cooled one - is this about voltage, current, or is it that the voltage is set and the current depends on the arc length? Do the two types differ in the way the tappings select the output? Ie does the oil cooled add taps in parallel?
Thanks for any info you might have on this.
