mig weld wire size

hi, i havent picked a mig torch for a few years and i didnt do much back then so really im a complete novice. i have a suzuki sj which im doing up and it requires a lot of welding to the body.
from what i read 0.6 wire will be my best bet for the bodywork but what sort of thickness metal will this hapilly run to? i plan to learn on scrap and build a welder trolley etc to get some practice before having a go on the vehicle.
i have a snapon mig 130 just like the cebora 130 turbo. will 0.6 wire do upto like 3mm thick?

0.6 will do 3mm if your wire speed can go high enough. Does seem a bit frantic with the wire speed that high

As 3mm will need 120 amps or so, you might not get enough heat on a 130A MIG with 0.6mm wire. A buddy has used 0.6 for 3mm steel but he has a 200A MIG so the voltage/speed can be cranked up high enough..

As shenion has posted, I also agree with that, it has more to do with the welding unit/gas mix and your skill than the wire size, I just finished another post discussing the same wire size. I had welded up 6mm plates with 0.6mm wire and did a hammer test on a test sample, can't remember the exact specs but I think it was 118 amp and I think about 26 to 28V "I'm a bit hazy on the voltage", and I definitely can't remember the wire speed now but I have it written down somewhere, in case you are interested just let me know. I will just have to look for it in the garage. I have added that picture here on this post as well for you. T joint of 6mm steel, so 3mm shouldn't be a problem, bevel your edges. Hope this helps.
