MIG torchs

Hello I'm just wondering what the mechafin MIG torchs are like . Has anyone used one . My MIG plant is a 250 amp plant . I'm currently looking for a new torch .

Depends what sort of amps you use the most.

Up to 180 amps I would use an mb15 torch, anything above this an mb25

I would just go for a abicor binzel torch

They are Reliable and spares are readily available.

220 amps mb25 torch is what you need.

Not used a star parts torch I guess they are just a copy of a binzel.

I think a local suppliers sells binzel and tweco the tweco is too heavy . I will have a look at the binzel .

We use MB 35 trafimet torches at work on 300A migatronic,we run around 200A , they become practically smoking hot.
I would go with water cooled Torches

I'd love a water cooled but I can't fit a water cooler on my plant . When they get hot would the tip pinch the wire .

It starts to be spattery , and the wire most likely bind and melts on the tip You can put a cooler whenever you want as a separate unit ,hose connection are not on the euro connector but on a side of it where two hoses come out

An mb25 at 220 amps for any length of time? Forget it. Absolutely useless.
Even a mb36 gets hot at that, but you can at least use it properly, and the shroud is a proper all metal slip on type that's much easier to clean.
You shouldn't have problems with tips binding on an mb36 unless its aluminium or you're running pulse.

Binzel do 3 types I think,
The standard one has the best conductivity and is probably fine for anything upto 200a
The heavy duty one is harder copper, not so good for low amps as its not so conductive.
They last longer but you need to be running miles of wire to notice a difference.
I've never managed to wear a tip out. I either loose them or replace them as I've messed them up from the wire burning back or me wtuffing it into the weld.
The silver ones are supposedly some kind of hybrid with a hard core and a plating.
I use them for stainless mig, only reason is I had a bag of them that fit my torch.
The stainless splatter wipes off of them easily which is nice.

There are loads of torches available, best one would depend on exactly what you are doing.

I also like the binzel abimig torches, they are basically heavier consumables in a smaller body, so a 300a torch would be about the same size as an mb25.
Nice if you are using it all day but you'll probably need to order the consumables in or online as they are not that common.
If I only had one welder and only wanted one torch I'd probably be going with what my local supplier stocked incase I needed parts for it halfway through a job...

That explains alot thank you . My local stocks starparts binzel type . He has a starparts t150 t250 and t360 torchs. I can get binzel parts locally . I like the look of the mechafin torchs but I'd have to order parts online . There's not many doing them over here I think

I like the binzel silver coated tips because for some reason I was going through 5 or 6 "heavy duty" tips per 15kg roll and i didn't know if it was because they were actually the soft copper ones or not. At least you know the silver ones are the harder copper, and they last very well, and easy to clean slag off of.
Not cheap at retail, but sometimes you can spy them on ebay for a good price.

I wouldn't be running the plant 8 hours a day 6 days aweek so it's just for repairs and gen fab . I don't like a big heavy torch . I'll take allook at the star parts mb25 and see least binzel parts are easy get

Mb25s are crap for 220 amps full stop. Yes they are theoretically capable, however if you're using it to put in actual welds as opposed to dicking around with it, they're crap. Compared to mb36s that is. Plus they have stupid shrouds, pathetic friction spring design, and overall, just not suited to heavier welding.
Unless you need a small torch for bodywork, it's much better just to get used to the size of a 36, they're a "proper" torch for 200amps+.

I'm coming from a job shop and repair work mentality, not a production mentality - and to be honest in production everyone runs water cooled torches anyway.

as for torch i have 2 sugestions :
1- Get a binzel mig torch cause it wins hand down in price an availability (i should know i have a esab torch )
2- Find out what is the amperage that you must use. No point in getting a mb36 if you only doing body pannel stuff (mb15 is smaller and ligther tahn a mb36). If you want to use the full range of the machine 220amps (you need to find out if the machine actualy delivers that) get a mb36 or even a liquid cool torch.
