Way back when I got my first welder, I did this. I have a DC, though.
I got my Hobart Handler 135 (for a song) but it needed gun parts. My uncle took care of that for me, but in the meantime I was itching to try something.
I picked up some 3/32 6013 rods and hooked up jumper cables to the current output, then cranked the volts up to max. I jumpered across the gun contact terminals, so it would stay on. I struck an arc and welded some 14 gauge steel pipe just fine. I seem to remember that it was very easy to keep it going, which is odd because I was completely new to welding.
