Mig spot welding...?

Does anyone spot weld with their mig..?

I've seen the shrouds with the spacers...do they work ....?
Can you make your own device/shroud...?

I have done it without the spacer shroud, just used the normal shroud. Do some tests on 2 layers of similar plate first. point the torch square on to the plate and experiment with stickout distance and trigger pull time. But both plates MUST be clamped tight together.

with mig its called plug welding, you will find plenty on it if you enter it in the search box

It does not have to be plug welding, that is achieved by drilling a hole in the top plate and rosette welding through the hole to the back plate. It is possibble as i described above without drilling, as said, clamped plates and correct power and timing the metal fuses right through. Try a few sample welds on similar scrap plate and see how difficult it is to break them appart.

yeah true I was mainly thinking of the common panel welds on cars and the fact that you have usually drilled the original weld out to replace a panel

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread but isn't this just a technique for any welder.... i.e. lap joint, fillet joint, spot weld, plug weld etc.

isnt it just two overlapping plates with a hole cut out in the frint plate....then weld put in the hole to join them together?

if its on thin car body stuff then its going to stick, surely???

no you clamp the pieces,
then make a spot weld on one surface and it welds, through the both pieces...

you can do it with or without holes in the front plate. either way both plates need clamping together. if you dont have holes in the front plate, you'll need to increase the power setting accordingly
