started mig welding a few days ago and these are 2 projects we had to do

simple lapjoint and t joint welds, 1 pass

im not satisfied with the t joint, i know i could do better, but here are the pics so far

I was wondering if anyone could explain how to achieve an Concaved bead? Thanks in advance

Tricky to tell from the photos. I'm guessing the weld build up is too high. The overlap joint looks a little light on power.

If the weld profile is too high then a higher voltage setting would reduce the height and increase the spread of the weld, and you do need to increase the voltage for a fillet weld over say a butt weld as there's more metal to heat up.

Do you neccessarily want the weld to be concave? It's difficult to penetrate all the way through to the outside corner of the joint so the weld does need a little build up on the inside of the corner to retain the thickness of the metala you are welding. A little buldge is often about right for fillet welds rather than going for concave.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Your welds look a whole lot neater than most new members and I notice you have a lot of properly named welding processes and a vague location in your profile. I'm worried you've joined to catch me out.

a concave bead isn\t required for these particular pieces,

the instructor would prefer a flat profile with correct leg lengths

for the lapjoint he wanted to see the weld be flush with the top plate, no undercutting or overlapping

my picture camera is pretty crap for upclose images, i dont have any macros on there, but i'll get some side profile images

mig welding is pretty cool, but i enjoy stick welding more at this present time.

Turn up the power a bit for the filet, and try and keep your hand traveling at a steady spped.

Looks very good though..is that a C&G piece by any chance?

The instructor's requirements sound fair. Which course are you doing?

I ought to try stick. Others here have said it can be rewarding, and the photos that flange jockey and puddles have posted look pretty amazing.

what is a c&g piece? never seen that abbreviation before

im doing a 9 month welding course, we touch on a lot of stuff,
oxyacetylene welding / cutting,
plasma arc cutting,
arc gouging
SMAW (stick welding)
GMAW (mig)
GTAW (tig)
blueprinting

we started the mig course a few days ago, learned how to change out FCAW with GMAW and vise versa, troubleshoot the wire drive system, etc

but anyway, i'll post some more mig pics as i get them, we gotta do fillet welds in all position, CWB practice tests for bending, etc .. same as we did for stick

Well, I don't know what to say! I take my hat off to you (well, mask cos I don't wear a hat ), those welds look superb!
You should be really proud to show them on here, keep 'em coming! Like Malcolm said, FJ and Puddles are the two main MMA users on here so if you need any advice I'm sure they'll be along to assist but looking at your test pieces I reallly don't think any help is necessary.

OK, I just thought it was my very beginner status that made me think most of these welds were virtually perfect, but now I see that even the old hands agree. Superb work!

i have to
- remove a little bit of spatter from the horizontal, vertical (down) and flat position T-joint fillet welds i have done

- complete a overhead T-joint fillet weld

- weld, gouge, grind and bend a mig, flat position CWB test

- try vertical up weaves

- try V-groove root weld

Then i'll post some more photos , should be interesting

well .. been practicing more GMAW

Got my fillet welds in Vert down, Over head, Flat and horizontal done

But been practicing some Vertical Up fillet welds
feel free to add comments or constructive criticism

(i never knocked off the little bits of slag that is visible)

Hi Diabolical,those vertical up jobbies look good to me,you must have been concentrating real hard.Only constructive criticism I can make is for you to dwell slightly longer at the toes of the weld to achieve mitre profile,when doing that you will probably have to turn the amps down to stop any sagging of the centre of the weld.The slag you refer to could well be deoxidisers,nice job,regards,Mad Mick
