Mig or tig ?

making some wall mount standoffs for an antenna mast . Back to back 3x2x 1/4 angle with a 2x1/8 box standoff.

In terms of structural integrity will it be better tigged or migged together please

I'd MIG it, heck of a lot quicker and easier - especially given the rust and paint

In terms of structural integrity, if done properly the differences are negligible

Regardless of process that rust and paint wants to be removed! Question also depends on how much juice you've got on tap.

Would almost go arc rather than either of the others.
Mig would be faster than tig and can't see no real benefit for tig to be used as it looks quite an agricutual item.

Good shout . Forgot to mention, it’ll all be cleaned up before welding but there will still be some pitting on the steel angle left. (farm scrap pile find). Mig sealey 140 Tig Cemont 160.

If that angle was supplied from china as packaging for something being shipped, Id not use it. I have some looks similar, size etc and its far softer than normal angle youd buy from a stock holder...

I have found TIG to give stronger welds. ( better penetration)

Personally would just use arc with 6013 rods they dont even have to worry about cleaning the paint or rust off it just gets vapourised. Should have an arc function if you have a tig welder, if you want it really strong multiple passes.

Plus one. Stick welding it is probably your best bet if youve only got a 140 amp mig set.

1/8 inch the mig welder you have would do but be topping it out, wouldnt be strong enough for the 1/4 inch IMO so stick be your best bet need about 190-200 amp maybe a bit more for the 1/4 inch in mig anyway

By the time your done ckeaning all that rust n paint off to TIG weld it you could have made and fitted it with mig.
I also agree with your set being a bit on the low side and mma welding if you have it would be the easiest and strongest if you are capable

Any one of those processes can stick that box down and providing the gear has got the out put requirements it’s not gonna make a blind bit of difference which you use.
140 amp mig is too gutless so rule that out.
Tig or MMA. Flip a coin if your capable of using either process.

Got the Tig out and decided it was too fiddly on some of the welds so Migged it. Got the hang of the torch feed as I went on

Took advantage of “fools spring” on Friday. Base is mounted. Attempted one man lift on the top section before accepting it wasnt a good day to die.
I really need to confirm I can get the car past it before enlisting help to fit the top section though

If I’m being really honest and I’m not looking to cause offence or start an online war but your welds don’t inspire me with confidence. Now I could be wrong and you made them better and didn’t post up the pictures but in a strong wind the leverage put on that frame is going to want to twist those mounts. I know it’s not holding a bridge up and as I said I’m not looking to offend anyone’s pride but ......... how hacked off would you be if it did break and fall on your car ?

I do like the principle idea of what you’ve done
