Mig not earthing

Hi hope someone can help inherited a Eland 200 mig welder wasnt working when i got it, sent it away had a couple of things done to it working well for a for a week now i cant seem to get it to earth could it be the transformer or hopfully something simple regards Tom Walters.

There are a number of things it could. Is the earth lead sound, its possible there is a break in the electrical connection on the earth lead. Earth clamp not connected correctly etc. Its difficult to say what it could be. Exam the earth cable make sure its in good condition. When you pull the trigger on the torch do you get a nice heavy click sound?

Checked earth wire and clamp and where the earth conects to the welder all in good condition it also makes a healthy click when trigger operated, do you think it could be the contacts?

The big fat click is the main contactor, which is good means its working as far as we know. I think you might have to be brave here, and open up the side case of the machine and look for loose connections inside. If need be post pics of the inside here, sometime its possible to see by visual inspection.

Have you taken the neg/pos leads off the welder.

You might have put them back on the wrong way.

a frind of mine avised me to get a copper crockodile connector that goes on earth return lead and to make sure where it is clamped to is free from paint and rust to clean with a bit of henry paper to get a good earth

What is the problem exactly when you say not earthing? We're thinking of earthing problems but that might not be it.

I'm guessing the wire is feeding but you aren't getting a spark? Or do you get a spark and it's just unpredictable like when you have a bad earth?

The wire is feeding well all wires inside seem to be all conected and in place, when i switch machine on i get an initial spark but after that nothing at all have even changed the earth lead! Its not a bad connection as i am only welding brand new metal

Check your gun at both ends, maybe the copper has come adrift

It might be that the contactor is making but is not letting the high current flow just because the contactor is engaging does not mean its OK

That is true about the contactor. the only real way to find the fault is to poke around inside the machine with an electrical meter. But you sort of need to know what you are looking for.
