i sometimes tack by closing my eyes depending upon the job but i would never dream of using a grinder without a gaurd like they showed on wheeler dealers

I used to watch AH from time to time, almost OD'd on it last Christmas and still catch the odd episode, but it's not really about the stuff they make, more about the anti-social nutters they employ and Boyd's inability to set realistic project deadlines. Was it just me, or has anyone else noticed that these projects they rush to finish off are always hanging around in the background of the next few builds? So the deadline was obviously just to make it exciting to the X-Factor crowd. They got into some trouble because the cars were effectively new - new chassis, new engine and transmission, new interior, new wiring and so on - so they had to pay different tax and so on, apparently they settled a test case and paid some damages. I lost interest in it when they bought a mint-looking 60s American car (no idea what it was, sorry) from out of someone's garage for about $25k, then trailered it back to the workshop and Boyd sat in it, revving the goolies off it until the engine blew up. Way to go, Boyd! And the trouble with Quest is that they don't show them in order, so (in one extreme case) we've got Boyd in the workshop really early because Roy has passed away that night, a couple of episodes later Roy's back in the workshop. And I watched quite a few episodes thinking "why doesn't that Mike speak up properly" as he was just mumbling all the time, but it wasn't for weeks that there was any mention that he'd had a major accident and broken all the bones in his face, and had it reconstructed.

Still, it kills an hour when there's nothing else on.

i knowexavtly what you mean, my dad used to refer to him as some illiterate fool to put it politeley and i didnt say anything either till i was the episode where they were at the bonneville salt flats and he explained..

Must agree with most comments, still find it quite interesting as I do most engineering and mechanical programmes.

Chop shop is a joke.
When they did the mk3 fiesta and put a zetec from a mondeo in it like it would be something special!
They bodged the subframe from the mondeo into the fiesta and it looked so dangerous.
A complete waste of time! Ford made a fiesta with that engine in.

Mythbusters is the best thing on at the minute, I've never seen them welding without a mask on

It's these types of shows that has encouraged me to be more mechanical and hands on with cars.

Since i first started watching them i have since restored two cars and converted a bigger engine into one of them. WD has got better and better compared to their first few series, Edd's technical skills have grown since they started and has a hand in almost every part of a car.

Got to hand it to them, they usually make money and often make a good amount.

As for safety, they should be more careful. However i have welded without a mask but turned away from the arc and never had any burns, but i dont weld for too long usually.

They should write a disclaimer at the end, don't try this at home when welding lol.

I knew all the guys and visited the shop often, your right about taking the money and running, but saying that I never found any of them to be more than nice blokes, unfortunately TV is not always real.
All of them are actually very talented in their own field.

AH and AC, what a bunch of chancers !! Boyd Codswallop was living on a reputation he earned in the primitive days of Hot Rodding, in the TV series he was just taking the money and running !! Basically they were just catalogue jockies !
As for American Chopper, they only got away with it because their customers were ignorant dolts that knew no better !!
Wish a TV production company would do a program on Crossthwaite and Gardener building an Auto Union V16 replica from scratch, including the engine, commisioned by no less than VAG !! THAT is craftsmanship !

Sadly your all right about being a d*** to get on tv.

I also like Build or Bust with that guy with half cornish/american twang in his accent. I watched one recently when a lad cut the tip of his thumb off on a bench grinder lol after he went to some dodgy hospital he came back and hand another piece of metal this time it a long pair of mole grips lol

It actually annoys me when people slate Boyd and the guys when they have only watched the TV show, I was always welcomed in the shop and only ever found them to be very friendly, At the end of the day don't believe what you see on TV as it ain't real 99% of the time.
I build cars for people and if i had the oppurtunity to go onto TV and act differently and get paid handsomely i would do it also, Who wouldn't !!!

i cant argue with the fact that the programmes have encouraged but would disagree that they are getting better

its good tv as long as you dont know nothing about engineering

I build cars for people and if i had the oppurtunity to go onto TV and act differently and get paid handsomely i would do it also, Who wouldn't !!!

i would but then again i would love to see a true engineering programme where i could actually learn what to do rather than just have a camera focussing on someone

i think the american shows may have more experts who are acting badly but i truly think edd china doesnt have a clue as he makes so many mistakes

True, he does make a few. However, they do little tech scenes sometimes explaining how things are done etc. I have learned from their shows. This show is not an engineering show as such, it about making cars good to make some profit. I remember the 205 one where they said the smoke coming out the back of the car, when Edd was driving it was due to the gear linkage popping off lol. It's more like either the block or manifold. Edd does give you a few tips to make life easier.

I like Overhaulin myself, their work is usually top notch. Saying that though i have spotted filler mistakes in the right light and very few other mistakes.

When Boyd was alive and making the show he must have been laughing all the way to the bank. We mere mortals who didn't get to meet the crew can only form an opinion from what we see on TV and as there is no disclaimer at the end stating that the participants are really nice guys and only acting as knobs for the camera I decided not to watch any more. I did like Jesse James in a couple of series of bike builds I watched but really don't care for the style of bike they were building but the techniques were useful to watch and applicable. I don't know what an Edd China is, sounds almost like an anagram of Echidna which is an ant eater though.
