Mig no helmet

Have been watching American Hot Rod on Quest recently, all about the actual building of them, very interesting. I am amazed though on the amount of times they mig weld without the use of any helmet whatsoever.

Only tacking i would think, even lots of tacks will get you burnt though. They are american after all !!!

You're quite correct, wouldn't like to try it myself though. Our cousins over the pond eh.

Used to watch that a fair bit, but seeing the standards they build to (engineering wise) are pitiful. 90% of their work would fail any engineering scrutiny over here for roadworthyness. They say they metal finish but then cover the cars in a layer of bog. I always liked old Roy though, he did things the old school way

I agree, if you removed every one and focused on Roy what a good show it could have been. Too late now as he's not with us any more.

It seems to happen a lot bodgers with no skill seem to get the TV series, look at la salvager on quest... that's like a guide how not to do things.

I spent a short time once doing some tacks without a helmet but closing my eyes. Next day my eyelids were sore to ******y and were sunburnt. Lesson learnt

I've seen a professional welder making MIG tacks on his old man's car with no helmet. He had a hand held shield to one side as he doesn't believe in these fancy automatic things.

I didn't ask whether he got arc eye.

I don't think it's a great idea.

i often tac with the shroud as my shield...only because i aint learnt how to look cool flicking my lid down after ive set the work

If I'm tacking without a mask (rare) I close my left hand (gloved!) around the shroud, cuts out most of the arc.

AH and AC, what a bunch of chancers !! Boyd Codswallop was living on a reputation he earned in the primitive days of Hot Rodding, in the TV series he was just taking the money and running !! Basically they were just catalogue jockies !
As for American Chopper, they only got away with it because their customers were ignorant dolts that knew no better !!
Wish a TV production company would do a program on Crossthwaite and Gardener building an Auto Union V16 replica from scratch, including the engine, commisioned by no less than VAG !! THAT is craftsmanship !

When I do this I always seem to catch my ear in the headband mech.
I have also been known to tack with my eyes closed and no mask.

When i'm tacking up I quite often dont wear a mask but I do cover the end of the torch with my hand, one of my other colleagues either does the same or holds his mask as a shield like roofman.

I can't weld without my helmet & gloves - just doesn't feel right. (Tried tacking without either)

Put it down to being fastidious about it when I first started (to avoid arc-eye) and now it's just habit!

i find it easier to weld always with gloves as it stops my arm flinching when it gets a bit of white hot spatter in it

Whilst I sniggered at the heaps AC and AHR churned out, nothing shocked me quite so much as the bloody deathtraps that 'Chop Shop' show was allowed to put on the road, some of the bodges were unbelievable.
