Mig like Tig

How would you replicate this Mig seam weld...

I believe its an "e-e-e-" torch move but can't seem to get it nailed!

Any ideas?

It looks like a double pulse mig did that, about £3,500 to get the look.

Yes doubled Pulsed mig set. Does a grand job for welds that are to be exposed to the general public and the like.. Cost £3,500 and up depends on the model

so is a pulsed mig the only way of achieving this effect? other than of course just stacking tack welds !!

ps, the guy that did that is using Lincoln SP135 Plus and a Lincoln PowerMIG 200

Assuming that a continuous bead has good pen all along its length. The continuous bead will be better. Using pulse like this will give variation in penetration (its probably all got adequate pen but there will be peaks and valleys) which could give rise to issues such as reduced fatigue life.

You can make a pulsed weld appear like a continuous weld, and these are usually better.

Yes and you are highly likely to have areas where there is no penetration and areas where there is undercut.

On the same theme! have you checked out the welding posted by ZTFab on the american WWW.weldingweb.com forum,The thread is called "mig like tig" same as this one. his welds are spot on(in fact the pic's posted here look exactly like his work) if you like the ripple effect, And he has stated on numerous occassions the technique is a series of eeeee movements done in the PULL direction and continuously no spot welds on top of each other., all with his Lincoln WITHOUT pulse, or on-off trigger action, his welds are very similar to Matt78, A true masterpiece in metal manipulation and understanding,

Gordon you beat me to it. They are pictures of ZTFabs welding. Not sure he uses Pulse, but a weave motion.

I keep ending up with the sort of pattern in the pic below when trying to fill the gap between two parts which are fixed in a jig. I can't do anything about the gap as those are the parts i'm given. The gap is about the width of the weld.
I'm pushing the torch down the right hand side a few mm then coming back and across to the other side. A sort of a weave type thing trying to fill fresh air. then it's turned over and the same on the other side but with something to weld to this time.

Yes gordon, ....the Kemppi...the shroud is small enough to get into all the tight spots on the rest of that job.

those welds look like continues tacks all right (the heat 'tide' mark on the mild steel is a give away), double pulse is a more fish scale look (and dam near impossible on mild). as for penetration it would be sufficient for that kind of work

When you guys talk about double pulse machines, I take it you mean machines that can do both tacks and continuous on/off cycles. My Bester Magster160 had this continuous on/off function. It was perfect for welding thin material. I used it often where penetration and control of burn through were an issue. Ideal for flaming through the rust layer on thin rusted sheets, but not blowing holes in the metal. The machine was 600 euro's new.

Wyn, your welds look great, but there's a shed load of undercut in there.
That's why the stacked dime mig weld is overrated - it looks better than it is.

Edit - the undercut is where you've swept over too quick, the weld is very flat and the heat has pulled the parent metal into the weld. Doesn't look bad where you've moved slower.
See when you're having to fill the gap, what happens if you just move in a straight line but slow - enough weave to just pick up the edges, but going slow, for the fill?

Your eyes are better than mine there Drains, I can see a little U/C on the top of the weld in the fore ground not what I would call "shed loads"
