With working that slow and to dial the machine in must be a nightmare. As you need enough to amps/volts to get penetration. And I take it a slow wire speed as you would get to much build up...As Woody said it's pausing in the right place and whipping in the right place that's the 'secret'
They do along with lots of patience to work/weld much slower than usual/is possible
See a similar thing with TIG, especially with those who love twitface and especially Septics... same basic movements exaggerated whether it's stacks of dimes or massive weaves, most produce defects even if they're beautifully consistant defects and a very few manage to keep things smoother without losing the definition to the pretty freeze lines. Watch a vid of some of the later examples and the thing that stands out the most is how incredibly slowly they work. I'll never have hands steady enough but more importantly i'd never have the patience to work that slowly which is part of the trick behind most of the flawless looking welds on Ti bicycle frames, any of the Marcello Manifolds and so on. They literally weld one. dime. at. a. time.
Can't see the HAZ of a weld with bare eyes [/pedantic] the heat tint is very uniform and also usually much wider (as the HAZ will be) than if it was just welded. Look at some of the work done by guys like David Gardiner with oxyfuel and you'll see heat tint that's even more uniform. No pretty dimes/weaves (welds are gonna metal finished anyway) but more importantly very little distortion and he's quick
