Have a look at: http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/mig_handbook.pdf for MIG (start at page 5) - GMAW is the American acronym for what we call MIG, and: http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/TIGhandbook/pdf/TIGBook_Chpt1.pdf for TIG. I think that should answer your question. The shielding gas has to be pure argon for TIG otherwise the tungsten burns away. Graham.
