Gethin, unless you fancy doing more welding after this or particularly want to rebuild that car, I would do the prep work before buying a welder to see if it is possible without spending a lot of time and money on the repair. I have repaired many cars over the years and you will always find much more than is initially visible. Assuming of course you want to repair it properly, my instincts are that for the £700 quoted you will get little more than a cosmetic patchwork job for the MOT. Of course you will be able to learn to weld and do it yourself eventually but welding is a skill which needs practise and experience and most of all time. A proper back to clean metal repair of that type of deterioration is likely to take weeks even after you have gained the confidence to start. Many (long) rebuilds start with a quick patch job which grows and grows by which time a good deal of money and time have been invested. Have you checked the cost of replacing the vehicle, secondhand they don't fetch much money because they are prone to the fault you have and the difficulty to repair cost effectively.
If you do decide to have a go then you have certainly found the right forum, there is much knowledge freely shared here to help you. Hope I don't sound to negative but you need to understand that most likely will not be a straightforward job. Good luck.
Keith
Sound advice there, imo.
