Can't beat the good money light
Ok update was chatting to a mate on way to work and he threw me one of the cheap ebay readers said he had not used it but feed back on it was good
So caution to the wind especially as in the instructions one of the points is keep a fire extinguisher suitable for gasoline, chemical etc in the first page of the instructions
What can this unit actual do
Followed a vid instruction and there where no codes but after a reading it pops up with this

put the expensive fuel in it too and tha Tash the hell out of it should clear it to get your through the mot
An 'Italian tune-up' [3rd gear and rev well for a few miles] can't do much harm.
Love a good EGR valve!
Clear the code before the test & by the time you come out of the test centre it will come back on for you
how far ? 1 mile 2 10 ?
The best way is to unbolt it & carb cleaner! It's a messy job, I pressure washed the inlet manifold on my vanso am i looking for the standared redx or a egr cleaner bottle or is it better to use the spray with the engine running ?
Can you pop the dashboard out and remove troublesome bulb?
That way it will not fail on that.
Some good videos on the tube, carbon build up id imagine. (EGR)
What vehicle and age?
I hadn't thought of that, admittedly. Think an mot person, checks all that on starting the engine?
I would spend 30 mins before MOT thrashing it, and if it does come on, wipe it and cross fingers.
Good luck anyway....
I used to carry one of those code readers in the Zafira as it was always playing up with EGR problems! I had enough in the end and as the missus had backed it into the skip and mashed the tailgate and the inlet manifold swirl flaps had also gone I part exed it for a Mitsubishi Outlander.
I'd say that if its blocked now it'll need taking off and replacing with a new one, you'll be amazed at how much crap is in the inlet manifold......
forget doing redex try good fuel and a thrashing but could still be looking at egr cleaning or replacing,,
