Yep the bulb has gone on mine too, so I asked in the electric shop for an appliance bulb for the microwave, they replied what kind of microwave? I told them, thay said ahh no, you got to take that one to us to have the bulb changed, so its still blown
You must have a super dooper modern one then, mines a 87 vintage matsui one still going strong, does yours make better pot noodle though

Its health and safety init, cant let a hairy arsed welder go poking inside a high voltage piece of equipment willy nilly can we, its for your own good, stick to your wood burner.

My local electrical shop ('Moronics') tries to tell me things like that too:
"Oh yes Madam: engineer fit only, it`s because of the dangerous 'rays'!"
My Panasonic microwave has a proprietary lamp (moulded with 90 degree blade connectors): £14.+ P&P ea.
Quick case-disassembly, a standard SES lamp (48 pence.)...bit of de/re-soldering and adaldite.....let there be light!

Heating the water in our microwave is no problem
.Our microwave is nearly 26 years old it purchase in Aug 1984, it cost £320 , gets used most days and I've given up trying to buy the internal bulb as it is a double contact earthed bayonet bulb ( last one cost about £14 some 20 years ago ).
In all the time we have had it we have never had anything boil up after removal not even fat in home made soup, we have had exploding spagboll and the odd bowl of baked beans go spflip but as they are always covered with a glass plate nothing has come of it.
Now can any body tell me the wattage of the machine... Toshiba were very very nice when I wrote to them .. " Mr Gould ,you have a very very old microwave ..we cannot tell you any details about it as it is so old.
I remember changing a bulb in the microwave that we had before this one, it was just a screw in appliance bulb that fits fridges, freezers etc (naw better not say washing machines, might have it wrong) It just screwed in behind a plate with a few holes in it held on by 1 screw, so when the bulb went in this one and without even looking at it, smart **** here headed along to (Euronics indeed Debs) for an appliance bulb.
For anyone who`s remotely interested about what power your microwave is producing you can carry out a test by putting in two glasses in the centre of the oven with 500ml of water in each, that water temp being no less than 17 deg C, note down the temp taken with your thermometer, stir the water, close door, set on full power and heat for 60 seconds, use a stopwatch for mechanical timers, then remove the water and stir with your thermometer and record the temp rise of both glasses and take the average of the two temps, whatever the temp rise is you multiply that by 70, as 1deg C = 70 watts of magnetron output. so if your average temp rise was 12 deg, 12 x 70 = 840w which would mean you have an oven that is producing 840 watts.
Now wasn't that riveting, much more exciting than watching paint dry.

I have seen the 650 watt bit .
I followed the link and it was not much use , however I'll play with Eil's formula a bit later on and see what is indicated ..have digi timer and + - 0.5 % digi thermometer and a supposedly accurate measuring tube .
Grapes are cool in a mircrowave as well. Slice it in half but leave a small amount of skin at the bottom attatched, then put them in the microwave!
I've never managed to superheat water in practice, i've tried a couple of times, in a clean glass but it didn't seem to work.
That said I only did it for a minute or so.
