Microsoft Office

My present pc is giving problems, has been for a while and is on the way out I think, I have another I bought last year so will be doing a change over this week.

They are both Windows 7 Professional which I do not want to change.

On the old one I have Microsoft Office and I want it on my new one, I can't locate any of the original discs for the pc or the software on it.

Is there an easy way to transfer office to the new pc or is it a no go.

What year Office is it? I think mine is 2007 - I could send you the disc to instal if all else fails.

It's 2003, old now but since I stopped designing course etc it does me spot on, I may be in touch if it's not an easy transfer.

Finding the product key may be a problem if don't have the box, but Hirens utilities has a program that will find these for you.

That's certainly worth a try, if I can sort the stuff to run the two side by side.

Depending on how stuck in your ways you are () have you considered OpenOffice instead?

Started on apache years ago and ended up given a full ms office suite. A few years back.
Just reinstalled oo and fine it a lot cleaner and a better workspace and faster without the bloat

I'm still running Office 2000 on W10. Both work fine!

Never tried/seen/used open office but if compatible may be interesting.

Libre might be another alternative.

You can legally download isos of many Microsoft products.
If office 2003 is still available all you need to do is use a key finder to retrieve your existing product key and you’re sorted.

I have Office 2010 and Office XP on disc if that's any help? Possibly Office 2003 too, but not sure...

It will be a couple of days before I know what I have on the new pc and what I need, my present pc..the one playing up has back up mirrored hard drives as well as the normal C drive with approx. 350gb of stuff on.

These should (I think) simply go into the new pc on a plug and play sort of basis...you can tell I am rubbish at this game .

To be double safe, today because there is years of work on there I am going to copy the stuff off one of them onto a standalone drive I have spare, it should then be impossible to lose everything no matter what dies or does not work.

you do realise that you can create a back up using acronis and reinstall it back onto another hard drive if you think the hard drive is failing

but best advice i can give is clean hard drive so basic stuff is left on it

You should be able to put the old drives in the new machine if there's space and they have the same interface (SATA vs IDE). Swapping drive C is not as straightforward as some of the device drivers may be different.

If you can't fit them in then get a USB case/adapter and connect your old hard drives to the new machine externally.

Yeah I am dumping the old C drive, both pc's are tower systems and there is plenty of space for the spare drives which are Sat A, not looked yet to see if there are spare Sat A sockets on the new motherboard, I think it has both a Sat A drive and dvd rom so that's two used up.

most systems have 4 sata plugins others have 6 to 8 you can add more using your pci slots

Update:

I always like to let those that have offered help know how things have went so....

I have now transferred everything I don't want to lose to an external drive and also moved the same stuff to the internal mirrored drives in the old pc, so have 3 back ups.

The new pc motherboard has two spare Sat A connectors so all is well there, if need be it will take my back up drives.

The new PC fired up after sitting in the cupboard for a year with no problem, it has open office on it which seems ok but I will probably want MS office simply because that's what I am used to, no rush now because of the following.

I took the side off the old pc, removed the cooling fan and heatsink, hoovered it all over and applied new thermal paste, checked all connections and gave everything a good tap with the screwdriver handle....as you do.

The old pc is now working perfectly, piece of cake this pc technician stuff

So will run the old one for a while and see how it goes, a question I have is what is the difference with thermal paste, the one I got was 99p delivered from ebay (UK seller) but going back to order some more I notice a massive variation in price...is there an equally massive variation in quality and performance?

The only issue was when I switched off the new pc it did 43 updates , took nearly an hour .
