mice in the ceiling

Mice have got into the ceiling of our living room, via the garage.

Ive laid traps out in the garage for days but its too far away from the source of the noise and they aren't getting touched.

On this photo, the scratching noise is coming from the area below the L/H window

This photo is from the attic of the garage, showing what is the corner of the house.

I cant get traps anywhere near the area that theyre scratching, I don't really want to rip up floorboards if I can help it, can anyone suggest a solution?

We have hounds so I would not use them, but have you considered those ultra sonic things?

No idea if they work or not, but its an easy try?

Get the traps as close as you can to the source of the noise & bait them with peanut butter. When they go looking for food they will hopefully go to the traps.

Ive looked into those on amazon, they got mixed reviews, but im thinking of getting one for the sake of 20 or so quid.

I carried the cat up the ladder and threw him in the attic for half an hour, he got himself excited and was searching out the crevices but to no avail.

It seems that the traps aren't on their actual 'patrol route'.

I had a trap and I had this pack of chocolate ginger I got for Christmas[foul stuff], mices seem to love it.

I wouldn't worry you can't put the traps where they are, I recon they will search out the food.

Are you using the things of the past? ie spring traps? if so you're wasting your time,like all animals and rodents they become educated in their learning period(fact) so todays requirement is the modern approach get yourself the sticky pad trap and put bits of mars bar on it.....it works and I can guarentee it does by two people who have taken the advice after them failling to catch the their mice on conventional spring traps and old wives tales cheese.

the oproblem with poison is it takes a while to kill the mouse,sticky back traps and they cannot move unless they chew their own legs off..

To spot where the mice are put a camera attached to a TV DVR recorder and record overnight and then watch where they are coming from or entering,pretty useful this for putting the traps where they are actually entering.

If you use poison they might crawl off somewhere equally inaccessible to die so you could have little rotting corpses lying around By the speed that maggots take over the little furry and feathered presents my cats bring back and leave under the carport I know I'd want to find the bodies so suggest none lethal traps.

Look for where they are getting in and seal that up with some poison inside, they like to run along edges beside walls or beams so locate traps there. I had mice in my workshop last winter spring traps with Stilton bate worked nicely. Could you tape the traps to long bamboo canes so you can get them in position?

Looking at how new the roof is it shouldn't be but no chance there's a gap and it's birds getting under the tile edges to nest? especially this time of the year... we had that and at times they can sound exactly the same as mice running around.

If they're not taking the bait, I doubt its mice.

When we lived with the Mrs' parents, they had a minor mice problem, upstairs. Put traps down, in a kitchen cupboard and ended up with 13. A good 50ft away from where they were spotted.

Blue food (poison) lots of it! Under no circumstances play at this if your not sure get a good pro in. vermin can and do wreck homes by chewing cables and plastic pipes. Are you sure its mice? we had rats in our ceiling one time and they were not as noisy as you might think.

Find were they came into the garage or ...... block it / fix it once the problem is gone though or you effectively might proof them in.

The mice round here must be really backwards then, I caught five last week in the worlds oldest Littlle Nipper trap, covered in old mouse blood and everything else that comes out of a mouse when the bar hits it at the back of the neck. Use something sticky they have to tug at to get it off the spike or eat in position. If they are staying they must be finding food, are you sure it's not birds getting in somewhere ?
