Given the detailed comment, I thought I'd reply if only to add balance.

One assumes AC balance for the cleaning action.

If you have read anything I wrote as being against welding, you have misinterpreted. Maybe I should have said "if you want to remake it, do so with the two pieces as one and separate afterwards".

All I am saying above is do not wade into splashing molten metal at it until you have considered what needs to be done after it has cooled.

I was wondering if it did distort, would leaving it for half an hour in the oven at gas mark 10 and then pushing onto the column civilise it?

On the rack on my meddings the pinon mechanism clamps to the column. The rack goes through this and attaches to to a sliding collar that pushes the drill table up the column when you wind the pinion.

I have owned about 4 of these meddings drills and recall at least two of them had cracked collars. Cast iron, I think. The collars had a single fixing screw to the rack allowing the collar to rotate freely around the column. I recommend remaking the collar in steel if you have the appropriate equipment. There is nothing precision about the collar it just needs to retain the rack against the column.

I think that's what I will do. Havnt got lathe but if I get a pipe close to required size I need it shouldn't cost to much to make hopefully. Thanks to everyone for advice.

What's the column diameter? If you specify the size, someone may have a bit spare.

Before I had a lathe, I used an exhaust clamp as a collar on a Meddings drill

Something like this.

I cut it in half so I had two clamps.

That will obviously not work for rack carriers.

What's the column diameter? If you specify the size, someone may have a bit spare.

The column is 89mm I think. I will need a large gearbox sacrificial gear at some point. Thanks for suggestions.
