Methods for deburring drill bit shanks

Just wondered what methods others use for the above. The types of burrs you get when a worn chuck slips and gouges the shank slightly. I normally just file them, but picked up a fair amount of drill bits recently, of which a lot seem to have suffered this fate, (nothing too extreme), and wondered if there might be quicker methods which won't be detrimental.

A touch on the corner of the grinding wheel to remove the high spot built up from the gouge and deburr the gouge if needed. More often than not the gouge doesn’t need deburring.

actually the shanks are normally quite soft.........I just use a very fine file.........mines a Bacho chain saw flat file....think I've said before this file 3/4" x 8" cost around a £8 and is used for polishing and deburring on the lathe still sharp after 10 years.......remember chain saw chains are high quality steel, so if it works that stuff ol anything we do won't bother it.......they also make nice round and 1/2 round files for similar money.........

Just grip in soft jaws and go steady with a file, A small amount of run-out won't matter, Drills are not a precision hole maker,

Dremel, zing zing, back in the box.
Drill bits are approximation devices anyway, and combined with a jacobs chuck, even more so. Some of the bigger ones I just grind to a collet diameter and grip with a collet, no more burrs to deal with.

a quick go over with the grinder or file. I have 6 sets 2 general purpose sets that get used on all sorts and 4 mint sets with no burs on them I only use in my best lathe chuck

I'll be honest, I've only ever seen to a shank in a lathe when I wanted to reduce the diameter (like a blacksmith's drill bit)...

But, you want them to look nice too don't you?

Appearances do tend to influence me. That's why I use a file, for minimal cross damage. Problem is, I definitely don't fancy filing all of these.

Ooh, here's a quick way.

Put them in a drill but don't fully tighten the chuck, then drill a hole and when it grabs the chuck will slip and deburr the shank

What do you use to grind them to a collet size?

Cheap spindexer in the surface grinder span with the cordless.

You just need encouragement.

Box of drills one side; empty box the other. File in hand and pick up 1st drill.

Rub, rub, rub; place in empty box, saved a pound. NEXT !
Rub, rub, rub; place in box, saved another pound. NEXT !
Rub, rub, rub; place in box, that's three pounds. NEXT !
Rub, rub, rub; place in box, four pounds. Hey, why can't I earn money this quick all the time ?

For the medium sizes add £5. Big ones, add a tenner.
