Evening all. ....my old shed/workshop is getting tired now.i will get it through this winter but next year I must build another...but I have been looking at complete ones..how many of you guys have a the metal sheds workshops...and have you had any issues with condensation.wooden ones are nice but not the best when welding....concrete is best but seriously priced ...

Metal sheds without insulation and correct ventilation make excellent swimming pools, my friend bought one for his motorbike and it was unbelievable the amount of condensation, especially this time of the year.

A friend of mine has two metal garages, argos best, as they were cheap and easy to put up. All his tools are now rusty.
Large steel farm type buildings can have an anti condensation lining, but it just absorbs moisture, so its all still there.

You can also get damp problems with concrete prefab type stuff too.

Wood breathes, and is a half decent insulator. Now whick shed supplier, is another mine field. They vary in price and quality wildly. You can line with fire retardent ply or fibre board. Or use fire retardent paints.

My first shed was an old Anderson shelter. Concrete base, and on a couple course of brick above ground level. Spent about three years trying everything I could to keep that dry before finally giving it up as a bad job. Loved that shed, but it was worthless as a shed.

I've got a small metal shed. Am giving it away when I get a proper timber one ! Only used for garden equipment but it gets soaking with condensation.

That's what I'd go with, if I were doing another. They need more maintenance externally than other choices, but timber is by far the best option when it comes to damp/condensation, IMHO. My main shed is practically a wooden shed within a concrete section one, for that reason. Even concrete wicks moisture like there's no tomorrow.

ive got an engineering brick built shed and also a garage changed into a shed

the roof of the brick built one has been reroofed twice as metal drips like a swine since last year with no felt now i put on the felt ive had no drips as of yet and its built the cold roof style

all depends on if you movable or permanent shed

I don't understand why people don't make metal sheds like industrial units? Or am I missing something??

i think its because they are insulated between the outside and inside of those industrial units as they are double skinned on the industrial units on walls and on the roof

I've got a brick built workshop but it has a corrugated steel roof. Because of the condensation I lined the whole lot with leftover pine tongue and groove removed from the kitchen walls and then got the wife to put insulation in between the two....(she's always pinching my welding gauntlets!!).... ....no more condensation

I looked st doing my barn roofs with insulated box profile sheeting. 100 mil thick. Would have been toasty warm too.

But after i got up off the floor from the shock of the price....I decided on a proper slate roof for pennies more using second hand slate.

as i was changing it anyway to an apex roof from a sloping roof ive now felted it, insulated and boarded underneath but ive used the cold roof method

ive also installed a wood burner through the roof as well

I suppose you could line a metal shed with ply or OSB so less condensation and would add strength.

agreed on the condensation, but for a cheap shed, try an old marine shipping container. They come in all sizes. This is going back years, but I bought an old 20 footer, that was out of certification. Got it for 250, and another 80 quid for the transport. Truck had a hiab on it, lifted it into position no bother. Try your nearest docks, probably find something, you want one that's not got its ticket, they can be picked up reasonably cheaply. The only thing is you need the means to lift it in place without using the lifting points..

I used to keep my motocrossers in it, so I spent a bit of time lining it out, never did completely get rid of the condensation, but good ventilation definitely helped.

Don't know what they cost now, but if you have the space, a good solution and instant shed...

Unfortunately you would struggle to get a decent container for £250 now, best I could find was £1200 for a decent 20 footer so gave it a miss.

1200, times have definitely changed, at that time they were glad to get rid of them, obviously they've gone up way more than I thought. Mind you even at 1200 still not a bad comparison for a ready made welding type Workshop compared with the building material costs, and time. I'd probably still go for it even at 1200...
