I've found ASD pretty unhelpful, as I'm an infrequent potential customer, low volume etc. I don't use them.
On the other hand, the local independant stock holder sold me a single length of 8mm bar last week, 3 quid, hardly worth his effort to get up from the desk, take it off the rack and hand it to me, yet he was as helpful as usual.
get the yellow pages out, or yell.com and get ringing round.
I don't think the mail order companies win unless you're after something like 6" of 4" bar, or a similarly proportioned off-cut.

We use Metals4U quite a bit at work. We always seem to want an odd 2 or 3 metres of something and they are very quick and reliable. I can't say how they rack up price wise - 'cos I don't pay the bill !! We aren't a fabricators we just build jigs / test rigs etc .
