They stamp the teeth in the newer files and only case harden them so i am told, rather than through hardening them. Grobet in Switzerland make needle/riffler files, but the prices are eyewatering.

I bought a set of chinese needle files about 20 years ago in the local hardware, still have them, they wern't half bad.

I use files a lot, break them in on a lump of brass before use on steel you will be surprised how much better they last. Putting them straight to work on steel considerably lowers their life. It don't take more than a minute or two. Don't care about brand

The chalk trick works, it helps when filing soft materials such as aluminium. I won't use those file brushes as the bristles are hardened steel and don't do the file any good. A better and cheaper solution is a short length of ordinary copper pipe with one end beaten flat, you can push the clogs and dirt out of the file teeth with it, its all i use and its fine.
Never ever chalked or carded files, no need to. Ask yourself why its clogging, no book or tutorial will tell you this change direction shavings glide out. Novice way is to just push in a straight line.
Also never ever chipped any teeth, to give you some idea a 3 sq bastard used to last a day and that was for making actions and associated parts for the trade Kent.
I had a look the other day used to bring the odd worn out file home and shocked to see many superb files with no name mainly English.
Also noticed Sandvik of old as in 80's and surprised to see a few old Swedish Oberg AB, some just marked Oberg presume Portugal very good but no where near as good as English Stubbs and the like from 30+ years ago.
Have several circa 2008 Austrian Bludan 2nd cut knife files which don't cut and don't last as well as Vallorbe which in turn went down the pan around 2003.
If you come across any old Viiala from Finland these are very good.
Have a nice half round 12" Millenicut, brilliant on aluminiums and wood.
Most files gone down the pan the last 12 years, you cannot get good files unless old stock not even Vallorbe they don't last like they used to.
Vivid memory of a budding entrepreneur doing a weeks crash course back in 2005 when still some good ish files around. He bought in his own Bahco files with moulded handles dead chuffed and was given some menial work. Needless to say he was quite angry to see his Bahco with flat spots all over in less than a days very light work. He was then showed selections of what we were using, some months old that's the difference.
