Metal delivery that are happy to help unload

hi guys. Got a few projects I want to do. I want to order some metal but don't have a fork lift. Do any of you deal with a company where the driver will be ok lifting each length of with you. In the past I've had it delivered to work then cut at work to what I want. However I don't want the boss to know what I'm to if you no what I mean.

Depends what it is really, particularly heavy items, or just lengths of box section of angles...
Most drivers from most firms are pretty helpful, and will happily lift stuff providing its not stupidly heavy.
That said, theres a lot around that will offer hiab delivery too.

All the steel suppliers I've used had drivers who where happy to help unload - I find if you are nice to people they tend to be nice back. The offer of a cup of tea often helps I don't have steel delivered very often, but very often have bits of machinery and pallets delivered and without exception the drivers have been helpful.

I am never usually there when they drop it off, they just unload it themselves. Then again the last time I was there he just undid the straps pulled the box section till it hit the ground and drove off. Steel slid nicely off the back. Bingo unloaded! Did have a good moan about how much he was paid.

I haven't found one that wouldn't! If I did it simply wouldn't get unloaded by me alone and the delivery should get sent back. There are limits to this of course as regards what is safe

Of course you have the 20kg rule these days

But really it depends what it is/how big it is best to talk to the company where you are ordering it from. Yes a decent driver will help but if you need a fork lift you need a fork lift.

If you look into more, while they can't stop you doing it, there is quite clear guidance that regular lifting of 20kg or more does damage - so what this means is the insurance of companies will go along with this and stop companies letting there employees lift 20kg or more.

So as a result most companies run the 20kg rule these days.

We had a really lazy driver who delivered to us for a good while. Parks up and waits for someone to come over to him. Lads normally go out to deliveries..not this bloke. Record was him sitting waiting 40 mins before he got out.

Sits in his cab, not wanting to help out whoever is on the forks.......watching him in with the forks picking gear off the bed, sorting skids etc etc. Make sure you ram his wagon body as hard as possible everytime you go in with the forks...watch his fat head rock from side to side everytime.

Then a hand appears at the window with the papers to sign...always ignore him, pretend not to have seen him. Cheeky sod asked our young lad to wrap his straps up and put them in the box. Laddo not daft....put all the straps in and threw all the rachet bits in our wheelbarrow.....'he only said put the straps in his box' Must have made things difficult for the next load...

Word is he got slapped at another fabricators and never seen him since.

Sure its not a rule. HSE deceided 25kg was a safe limit an average person could carry though it was up to that person to say if it was safe or not. A fit man would find 25kg was no problem but a pregnant women would not. Also depends on height restrications, what was being carried, etc, etc. Cement bags are 25kg because of this.

OMG, try taking one bag at a time at the builders merchant- even the counter staff will take the . I should like to see this average man- sounds like a bit of a whimp to me

If you have got to handball 40 bags I never see anyone carrying more than 1 bag at a time!

Well, I have never need 40 bags in one go! That's a lot of muck to put down in a day mixed by hand, not to mention the sand weight etc.
