Yes I get that which is why I said put a new gasket in and put it back together.
As the OP has already in an ideal world he would get it skimmed but if money it tight then putting it back together with a new gasket is the best option.
it always makes me wonder why people worry so much about the head being flat, yet never bother to check the flatness of the block. if it was fine before the head was taken off (not blown head gasket), I'd just fit a new gasket and not worry about it......Im no motor mechanic though
Most likely because many vehicles that suffer head gasket failures have iron blocks which are less likely to warp and ali heads. Even if the block is ali then it's more rigid than the head and less likely to warp. That said whenever I've had a head off I tend to put the straight edge on the block as well

the head can sometimes distort the block tends not to. if the head gasket does blow it can tend to burn between the bores and does need re skimming
