Ok Thank's I will cut!?! the 4 bottles up and scrap them ,,If Messer is no more,, It's only my friend got a new workshop and there was 4 gas bottles left from the last guy! Last workshop, he had 16 x 5ft XXX bottles gave them a call to pick up 5 times they did not pick,, ask at a welding shop and all we got was do not take them to him,so they got cut up for scrap,,

Just be very careful fella if you are cutting them up, not sure about Messer cylinders but I know BOC cylinders are never empty, the neck valve always ensures there is positive inside the cylinder even when you can't get anymore gas out of the cylinder. Probably best to unscrew the neck valve before you start to chop em up

If acetylene bottles are full of something porous (I think I read somewhere it was diatomaceous earth) and acetone, surely this means they cannot be cut open as the acetone (Possibly still containing some dissolved acetylene) would ignite/explode?
They are not that bad to do as they have a black carbon!! in side,small ones have like a clay!! I have cut up ton's of cylinders and only had one bad one and that was a air! cylinder that had a lung in side of it, but then I did see a guy put gun to an old 205L drum and it ended up in 4! bits over the yard and he was a lucky man to walk away from it,,I did have look to see if Messer are still going but there is not a thing to say they are no more

I found in my more recent Googlings, either acetone or dimethylformamide (I've never heard of it either
) can be used to dissolve acetylene and the porous substance used today is "Agamassan" but there have been loads of other things used such as carbon, diatomatacious earth, peat, pumice, asbestos, cellulose waste, kapok, cement and coal.

monolithic materia is in the small ones, looks like clay! only see one big one like it come off a boat form the US! all the 5ft!!! one's I have cut had like a black carbon they do give out a big flame and they take a bit of time burn off, I had an old one that was 40! years old and been on the sea bed for years and it was the same,

Anyway Tigmeup, you've got your answer and everyone if sheltering round the back with you talking about cutting acetylene cyclinders up. Some poor sod might come across this thread in years to come and think its an acceptable thing to do, when it's pretty clear to everyone its not!
