MDPE poly pipe inserts no longer required?

I saw a thread on the screwfix forums saying that inserts/liners are no longer required on MDPE poly pipe. I just text my plumber friend and he says he's not heard about any such change.

This is for my sprinkler system, I'm uising poly pipe to deliver water to pop up sprinklers.

Use the inserts, they are pennies and have always been required

Agree with Kayos, they cost next to nothing but the pain they'd cause when you have umpteen leaks to fix makes it worth just fitting them.

Rightly or wrongly, I haven't used an insert on anything in about 10yrs. For us, a farm, they're a hindrance to repairs, something for less than perfect quality water to silt up against/restrict flow. Our commercial plumbers say the same. Can't say I see any joint leaks, other than where the pipe has been marked.

But I wouldn't advise not using them. For all their disadvantages, they obviously add rigidity and stiffness to the pipe ends for minimal cost

Spend the money on a decent fitting,

Genuine plasson fittings are epic,
Other stuff can be sub par.

For inserts depends on if you fancy going up a size to compensate.
(25mm pipe with insert is similar to 20mm without) etc

The only place I have used them on 25mm pipe is the fixing to the bore hole pump as I have had to pull the pump out using the pipe when the wire snagged jamming the pump in so the rope snapped. The pipe stretched during this process but the fitting held fine & that was with no liner.

The shortness of the liner would restrict it but not to the same extent as it all being a smaller diameter.

Yep agreed, but I'm used to plumbing most stuff in 32mm if not 50 now dealing with farms.

Personally would rather too big than too little.

I've had joints fail under mains pressure on 1/2" & 3/4" blue MDPE pipe & it was always where there was no insert!

Severn Trent around this area ,have had no end of problems with fittings failing , probably /maybe because they boost the pressure to get to the higher village up the road . Every few months they turn up to fix someone's stop tap box or something in the main road .
